Thread: The most powerful song ever?

Can't ... stop ... listening. Just a super, super hook. Full of thought, complexity and passion.

1. Use good headphones/speakers.
2. Be generous with the volume, include some low end.
3. Stop doing whatever else you're doing and pay attention.
4. Listen to it at least 2X.
5. Report back.

I didn't make it past 30 seconds. Honest.

Not very appealing to my tastes.

I made it 3 minutes. Too much hipster flailing.

There's a ton of options to choose from in the album of that title or 'Red' or 'Larks Tongue in Aspic' or 'Starless and Bible Black'.

It's tough to hear this song while driving and not start speeding once it really kicks in.

The opening and first few minutes of Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand" is pretty kickass- it's like a wave breaking over you (with electric guitar slayage!). I also nominate the Beastie Boys' "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun," since I'm listening to it right now.

Don't know about most powerful EVAR, but these were/are powerful to me...formulaic, but powerful nontheless.

That instrumental from Silversun Pickups (a group I'd never heard of) was pretty good as well.

As for Sic Transit Gloria (also a group I'm unfamiliar with), I'll have to look up more of their stuff. Pretty kickass.

Goddamn, Siamese Dream is one of the best start to finish albums ever. One of those albums that you can't bring yourself to listen to a single from, you just want to hear the whole thing in it's entirety.

Silversun Pickups are basically a newer version of the Smashing Pumpkins. Deep albums. Definitely check them out.



"Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades" is a song by the band Brand New. Good stuff too.
- Their first album (Your Favorite Weapon) sounds a lot like a better version of Blink182 and Taking Back Sunday; you could skip it.
- Their second (Deja Entendu) is awesome, but definitely reminiscent of other current bands; thus the album name.
- Their third effort (Fight Off Your Demons) really showed the band coming into its own; is a must have as far as I'm concerned, very similar to Siamese Dream in that it makes you really want to listen to the whole album in its entirety. IMHO, its just as close to Siamese Dream perfection as you can get.




I've played in several bands and played a lot of shows in a previous life...I'm a very active listener and get bored easily. The bands in my previous post generally keep my attention.

One more...but now I'm just being self indulgent.

Deja Entendu was my favourite from them, by far. "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" was my favourite song for a long time after it came out (most of high school), and I'd say it's more powerful than Sic Transit Gloria (but it's just semantics at this point). Very interesting to listen to Deja Entendu and Tell All Your Friends by Taking Back Sunday back-to-back. It's basically chronicles the falling out of two best friends. The most obvious songs are "There's No I in Team" and "Okay, I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't." Really though, these are petty, adolescent albums -- but I still like 'em. (Btw, Fight Off Your Demons was a collection of demos, not a full album.)

The Mars Volta, for all of their cult status, never did anything for me. They're one of those bands I tried to like, but really couldn't get into at all. Same thing with At The Drive In.

As far as the "most powerful song ever," I'm gonna have to go an entirely different direction. Talk about "thought, complexity and passion!" Nothing else compares, IMO.

Dandy's and Pumpkins are awesome contributions to this thread for sure.

Nearly all of Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia and Siamese Dream would qualify.

It's gonna be the Dandy Warhol's on the bike ride later. And maybe some New Pornographers as they seem to evoke similar feelings for me.
