last minute oregon beta
Headed to Oregon to ride (and attend a wedding)...schedule is Black Rock on Saturday, then Oakridge for two days and then two-three days in Bend. We are bringing baggy shorts, full-finger gloves, XC helmets, knee pads, and 5.75" travel bikes; we like to ride up and then back down.
Looking for:
- Ride suggestion in Oakridge (besides Alpine, thinking Lawler or MFT?)
- Ride suggestions in Bend (yes, I know there's threads, but Bend has a massive trail network).
- Food and beer/brewery/distillery suggestions throughout. We are planning to bring an empty growler.
- Other cool places to check out as we will likely take a day off.
Thanks in advance. We heard you in our twilight caves, one hundred fathom deep below, for notes of joy can pierce the waves, that drown each sound of war and woe.

We're gonna be in Bend this weekend. There's tons of trails there. Check out any bike shop and get the good waterproof map of the area. Phil's Trails area outside of Bend, Peterson Ridge in outside of sisters are all good ones I can recommend and have ridden. Check out http://cotamtb.com/trails/ to get you started.
The food and beer in Bend...Deschutes brewery.

Thanks. Any specific loops or trails within Phil's that you recommend?

Do the brewery trail in Bend.
Personal likes: Boneyard, Silver Moon, Cascade Lakes.
Other things to do: Hang out at McMenamins around the firepit and drink Rubinators, check out Smith Rock.

I was just out there last weekend. Rode phil's (main route up the hill, buff and not steep except at the very end), whoops (jump lines, berms, but a little torn up right now), grand slam (some nice technical sections on the lower half), and storm king (fast & swoopy xc). You can lap whoops if you want by climbing back up the dirt road you cross at the bottom. I did 26 miles in one morning and probably didn't cover half the trails out there.

not a local there so others who are can certainly provide better info, but I thought Tiddlywinks was awesome as well (similar to storm king with more rollers etc).
I can't get enough of the bachelor bitter from Deschutes brewpub... only poured there I believe, really nice trad style bitter.

Between Oakridge and Bend, there's Waldo Lake. It's a nice ride cross-country if you go around the lake and the water is super clear. Very cold water, but refreshing. Nice campsites too.

Some of the Central Oregon trails are getting dusty and chewed up. Maybe try some of the higher up trails (higher up than Phil's). It's kind of hit and miss. Riding today thought Ben's and South Fork to Wanoga shelter were chopped up, Skyliner trail and the trail along Tumalo creek are in great shape. Upper whoops and whoops are pretty chewed up, but probably ok with your squish bikes. Kents is in good shape. Upper Phils is in decent shape. Storm king is getting choppy.
Deschutes is always good, but Boneyard beers, Goodlife, and coming on lately (improving fast) 10 barrel brewery are all worth a try. Feel free to shoot me a pm as you get closer.

Polly is right, lower trails are pretty shot. North Fork - happy valley - farewell is a great 2 hour loop, in the watershed, so pretty. Stop at the Ale Apothecary on your way up there. Check if CogWild is doing a Swampy shuttle and jump on that ASAP. 10 Barrel Apocalypse is 3 and done, son. Deschutes is good. Crux just opened (old master brewer from Deschutes) Brother Johns for good eats, McMenamins O'Kanes for the fire and live Dead till 11, and the Parilla fish tacos. Rent a tube by the Old Mill and float the river, the bikini hatch is damn fine.

Thanks everyone so far.
What's the deal with the Flagline trail in Bend? Closed until mid-August? Seems like it's commonly used in a lot of Bachelor -> Bend rides.
edit: Ale Apothecary looks amazing.Last edited by butterscotch; 08-03-2012 at 09:42 AM.

Yep, Flagline is great but is closed until August 15th. If I remember right it has something to do with elk migration. The North fork- happy valley - farewell bend loop mentioned above puts you very close to this area. Highly recommended.

echoing whats been said, get higher to avoid some blown out or dusty trails, not that anything is that bad but higher is more betterrer
just pick something that sounds sweet and go for it, dont stress on what you miss, so much good riding you cant fit it into one week, enjoy OR!
if you are looking for another ride between BR and oakridge check into marys peak, prime condition right now
i "may" be at BR tomorrow for a quick early lap, have afternoon plans but might try to sneak out if i can get away with it
deschutes is overrated imo... much better local brew/food to be found, hit block 15 in corvallis after your BR stop on the way south for some eats and SOLID beer, growlers to go as well...

Also heading down there in about a month and a half for some riding and fishing. Have some buddies flying in so they'll need to rent bikes, looks like Hutch's has a selection, any other advice on local shops? Anywhere to rent a singlespeed?

Might try webcyclery. They carry niner, salsa and some other good brands. I know Hutch's has a pretty large Specialized fleet. Bring warm clothes, because in a month and a half it can be pretty cold in the mornings and evenings.
