There goes my summer
i'm sure thius is common, but went over bars yesterday, turned my right clavicle into multiple pieces. Haven't seen the orthopod yet, but I know that the MTB yurt trip i had scheduled mid-August, the backpacking trip in early August, and any of vthe fly fishing i planned on are completely toast. also figure that shooting my .30-06 in October isn't going to happen. Maybe it's time to learn to flycast left-handed.

Rule #1: Don't land on your head.
In the world of broken bones, clavicles are pretty easy. I've done it twice and have the lumpy shoulders to show for it.
Last thursday I went over the bars at the bike park - landed square on the top of my head. Hands never left the bars. I broke rule #1 pretty badly.
Seriously lucky to be alive and walking. My shoulder was fuuuucked up, but I've been forcing myself to do really painful stretches which have gained me back about 50% of my mobility.
Anyways, sorry to hear about the accident - but it happens to damn near everybody sooner or later (sometimes more than once!)
Heal up and you'll make the enchilada fest.

crunched my finger on memorial day weekend, had surgery and pins, and won't be able to ride my bike for a while longer, so I feel your pain. Good luck with recovery!

just saw the orthopod. no surgery recommended, despite compound fracture. just a brace, pills, grin and bear it. how does Norco interact with alcohol ? THC?

I violated rule #1 two weeks ago and wound up with a compression fracture in C7 along with other accompanying lumps, concussion etc...
No surgery, 6 weeks in a collar and some PT. Could've been worse I guess. Cheers to all who can't practice medicinal mountain biking for a spell.

Had the same diagnosis when I snapped my humerus. I took the pills for the first week then swapped back into my normal drinking habits, so I can't speak to the mixture.
I'd quit the pills as soon as they don't feel absolutely necessary. I've had several friends develop serious addictions to pain meds after injuries.

Oof, did the same thing Saturday in the bike park. Remember start of the run and then on backboard in ambulance. No idea what happened in between but apparently was on a small easy jump. Concussion, broken Collarbone and huge (1 foot diameter now) hematoma on hip which I'll spare y'all from seeing, facebook friends weren't so fortunate, seeing ortho on Wednesday rambling on painkillers now. Best of luck healing up! shooting for Enchilada fest too.

I must be feeling a little better, because now I'm gettng bitter about all the stuff I either have to cancel or that I will go to but not actually participate in while I watch others have fun. August: yurt trip for MTB; Sawtooth backpack trip; downhilling at Sun Valley. September: flyfishing around home, Yellowxtone trip. October:deer huning, but at least I shoul be able to fish by then.

Been there. Take it easy the next couple months and you could potentially make elk/deer season. Over do things early and you might end up having surgery.
What about camping with day hikes instead of backpacking?

^^^ while sitting in the patrol tent yesterday I overheard two patrollers finishing up their paperwork from the previous incident, which had resulted in ambulance transport. As they went over the list of injuries including several fractures and a perforated lip and cheek, I almost felt a bit lucky.
Adn in response to "wrong forum" I am not positive of the preise sequence of events leading to my crash, but I think my tubeless front wheel may have burped, flattened, and then dug into the loose dirt, chucking me over the bars. Once I heal up, I think I'm going back to tubes. A littl emore weight, but foolproof, and I'm definitely a fool.

I clipped my bars on a stump at Targhee this weekend. Apparently my bike has an ejection seat I was not aware of. Full flip way off below the trail. Landed with back on rock. 3 broke ass ribs.

If it makes you feel any better, I once perforated my lip and cheek with a rock. I could close my lips and squirt fluid out my cheek. It actually wasn't that bad - clavicle seems way worse, although I've yet to break mine (knock on wood).
That probably doesn't actually make you feel any better, but at least you can go to sleep knowing that you had a fucking awesome crash that you'll be able to tell chicks about for years to come.

what did I say about the trails at Bogus being washed out on some of the corners? There were washed out corners on Morningstar, Face Trail and Brewers Byway. Which one did you wreck on?
That's nothing James...trying fracturing your scapula at the switchback on the ridge road and riding the rest of the way down Dry Creek.
Seriously though, with your arm in a sling for 3 weeks, keep it immobile, everything in your shoulder will stiffen up, after (who'd you see for your ortho?) they release you from your immobilization, start doing simple arm and shoulder exercises (see focus physical therapy website). Wait another 3 weeks or so and start doing more stretches and motion and you'll be back in no time.
As for Norco and alcohol....um, as a medical professional, I'd strongly advise against it, but from personal experience Norco/Flexiril and beer do quite well in taking away the pain and allowing you to melt into the couch. The THC does that anyways.

Just to expand on this, alcohol + acetaminophen = very bad for the liver. Try and get non-APAP pain meds or don't mix with booze.
I'm a little surprised surgery was not recommended since it sounds like a pretty bad break. After seeing how well altachic recovered following her surgery last year (out of the sling within 2-3 days with a very severe break), I'd be pushing for it if I ever broke mine.

Vibes. I'm sure you'll heal up fine.
As far as rule #1, using my head to stop myself mean I don't refuck up my left shoulder, or do the right too.
It seems my neck can reasonably accommodate absorbing 185lbs suddenly coming to a halt in a low-speed low-angle fall.
Ya know. Reasonably. For a neck.No longer stuck.

There are mixed sentiments/data about fixing clavicles, especially in young healthy athletic people. I did mine dirt jumping a few years ago, had it fixed, and was back on a (road anyway) bike in less than a week. I know a bunch of other folks who have managed them both ways, and especially in displaced/comminuted fractures (which it sounds like you may have) I can't imagine not getting it fixed based on my and their experience.
Post your films if you can get them and don't be shy about getting a second opinion. No, the real point is, I don't give a damn
