Thread: Let's fix the app!

I've been using the Android app pretty regularly for quite some time now. When it first came out I dismissed it as inferior to the real site in a browser on the phone, but after playing with it for a while I realized that it's really much quicker and easier to use.

Tye implied that there's a new app on the way so I may be too late, but there are a bunch of improvements that I would love to see in future versions.

I don't know anything about programming this stuff and can only assume that some of these things will be easier than others, but here's my list of things that will make the app better..

Remember when Padded Room conditions have been accepted.

Offer a polyass block from new posts.

Make pictures show up in relative full-size within posts.

Emoticons. That's what they're called, right? The smiley faces and finger mustache and such...

Have an option to disable the phone signature.

When you paste something immediately after any text (like an image url after [img] there is automatically a space added between the two which has to be deleted before the image code will work. Can we get rid of that?

I'm sure there are more I'm not thinking of, app users, what did I miss?

You can turn off the sig.

Make it so I don't have to log in nine times a day.

Second that... Block polyass from new posts. I have a few beers, open the app, and just get pissed off at political bullshit, which is not why I wanted to open the app.

The staying logged in and padded room fix look good, excluding PolyAss doesn't, will pass the rest along.

You could treat polyass like padded room... 18 and over and filtered from new posts... Gotta be 18 to vote anyway, and kids probably should sign a waiver to read the crap in polyass.

When I hit the home button to exit the app with a thread open, do some other things on my phone, and then open the app again it will bring me back to the thread I was reading. From there hitting the back button should bring me back to the Latest menu, but instead it tends to just crash and shutdown the whole thing..

I probably have already said too much, but the bit of testing i got to do had that issue fixed. It still dropped very occasionally, but when I came back i was still logged in and on the Latest menu. I don't think this round is as much a wholesale overhaul as much as trying to tune up it's reliability.

yea that happens to me, though not as often since my phone updated to jelly bean. its probably due to memory usage by the android system

Polls. Don't exist as of now.. can we get that going? If it doesn't work, maybe just some sort of notification to let the user know a thread has a poll attached to it?

If you get pissed just looking at the title of a political thread, I think it's time for some strong medication. Bullets to the dome usually work real well.

They don't work in Tapatalk (only reliable phone version to view the site) either. Nor do other sites polls work in tapatalk. Not sure whose problem it is, but a fact of life for the time being.

That's a horrible idea. Pictures are data hogs. The only way this would even be acceptable is if there was an option to turn off images completely.

Another item of possible attention:

When you post using an iPhone or iPad, there should be a way to go back to the forum list or the forum you were looking/posting in. Currently, if you post you need to hit "back", which either logs you out or doesn't register your post on your screen.

Good work so far! A couple fixes and it will be dynamite!

The logging out glitch seems to be pretty fixed. We will have to look in to the other issue, but to me the getting logged out/app dropping glitch was the biggest PITA...

Here's another one, the post preview under the thread title in the Latest lists shows the last post, but the preview in the Forums list shows the first post. Makes a lot more sense IMO to show latest post in the Forums list too..

If folks agree, at least that should be an easy fix. [ /Biggrin emoticon that I can't use from the app]

It hasn't crashed in at least a week, pretty sweet!

Padded room doesn't show up in recently participated active threads but I can live with that.

tks, i'll pass that glitch on. It does show up in recent unread posts, which is where i tend to hang, so didn't catch the other...

edit: it still crashes on me every few days, but the good news is that i haven't had to re-login at all...which is nice.

Not sure if this is in the works, but the pm Tab crashes out immediately on my s 3. It will load a couple pm'a like it will show you the inbox, freeze and then close.

My app exits every time I hit back while in a thread so I have to restart the app for every thread!

^It's a shitty workaround but you could always quote, select all text, copy, back out to the thread, quote the next one and paste your last one into it. Definite PITA but it works.

Is there a way to post pics from the Android app? I know you can put in a hyperlink, but I want to share pictures from my phone. If that's not a function yet, it should be: the iPhone app makes it pretty simple.
