Yeah, cool, that's what I want. Sitting in the crowd. Thanks for the advice. I work with a couple of knuckleheads who spent a lot of money, but do the deer in headlights thing when I ask this simple stuff.
Went back to Best Buy and heard the Denon 1713 through affordable speakers in their sound room with a cool, smart kid working the controls, and it was impressive. I'll probably start with the receiver and a subwoofer, and work up from there.
It isn't necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice. There are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia.

Simple but awesome thing about Denon; If you don't turn the receiver on, it passes audio through the HDMI to your TV's speakers. When you turn the receiver on it mutes the audio to your TV and only plays on your audio system.
I mention this because not all home theater receivers pass audio through to your TV when powered off, and not all mute TV when powered on. Having both TV speakers and system speakers on at the same time can produce an echo if there's a delay between TV and system speakers, plus messes up the EQ.
Did the kid demonstrate the Audyssey auto level/EQ calibration? Makes set-up really easy no matter your configuration, speakers placement or room shape.Wag more, bark less

No, but read about it. Sounds cool.
Now that I know that most good HD broadcast is surround sound, especially sports, I'm in. I see no reason to spend two or three hundred bucks and deal with Deegan traffic to go to Yankee Stadium with that at home. Maybe I'll get one of those Lazy Boys that Homer Simpson invented with the hole in the seat so I never have to leave the room.
Edit: What's also pretty cool about these new receivers is how they integrate into ITunes with Airplay, built in Sirius, and other internet radio stuff.Last edited by Benny Profane; 07-27-2012 at 08:30 AM.

Whenever a person buys a fancy new HDTV, and cheaps out by not buying a blu-ray player, then they don't deserve to have good surround sound. Blu-ray players are dirt cheap now. I mostly use my PS3, but also have a $50 cheap-o Dynex from BB that has Netflix and built-in wifi for Netflix and stuff (relegated to treadmill use). The uncompressed surround sound (DTS-HD & Dolby TrueHD) that comes with Blu-ray is freaking awesome.
Don't listen to Capulin Overdrive. A crappy 5.1 system and dvd surround? For a fly new 50" Samsung LED?! That's the equivalent of buying a new Ferrari and putting some crap H-rated passenger tires on it. It's like buying a new pair of whatever your favorite ski is, and putting some crappy recreational beginner binders on 'em.
