Highland Lakes/Folger Peak July 6, 2012
hutchy and i are doing our best to get turns in each month this year. for me it will be 3 or 4 consecutive years and this will be her first if she makes it. so for july i thought the highland lakes area would be an excellent choice given that it had fun fun snow at the end of august last year. i was mistaken. we did find some snow and it was enough to get our required 10 turns in, but the lakeside patches and pond skimming were long gone. still, it's a beautiful place to camp and fun was had
we arrived a little late in the day so hutchy sprints to set up the tent

then we started our hike up to folgers peak, since we had seen some decent patches from highway 4. it's a pretty hike

and not too far either. did i mention pretty

despite being fairly easy, it was hot.

so hutchy was excited to get to the top

wicked excited

mostly cuz there was beer

and variety at that

we'll just climb down there and ski that

i'm thinking, wtf??!!

she made it look somewhat easy, so i was ok with it. after this pic i geared up and climbed down

when i got to the snow i found her in tears. nacho had jumped on her and she slipped and slid down the rocks, dislocating her shoulder.
i said "who cares about your shoulder, look what you did to your ass".

butt seriously, if she hadn't stopped when she hit the snow, things could have been much much worse
we were both a bit shaken up. i was suddenly aware that without poles i might not be able to stop myself in a fall and that a fall was more likely without poles

the result was we didn't make our required 10 turns in the couloir, though we did make some

hutchy

we spotted another more sizable patch that also happened to be on our way out. always a trooper, hutchy led the way.

i followed

then i led on the way down, making exactly 10 turns

we'll go ahead and say she made 10 too.

then i found a snowboard

it was heavy

so nacho helped (not!)

but he's cute

the down

uh oh. back seat

abort! abort!

then we headed back, and i saw a flower

flowers are pretty

more pretty flowers, a dog, and mount airola

just flowers, and a dog

nom nom nom...

Impressive effort and great photos.
That downclimb is still sketchy even when there is more snow.
Way to keep your streaks alive!

You should marry that girl.
One day she's gonna wake up and realize what a (pow)dork you look like.
Good job, friend. There is hope for me!No longer stuck.

I loved going to Highland Lakes back in the day- June always seemed the best month. Was contemplating heading up this weekend, in fact. More likely, I'll be back in the fall after the crowds have gone.

Your ten turn patch is usually my last run of the year, but it typically extends all the way down into the drainage. Went up two weekends ago to ski it, but saw from Hwy 4 that it had melted out, so did a hike up the Elbow instead. Usually I go straight from the upper campground up the drainage to the saddle where you find the ten turn patch. Quick, easy and one of the more beautifl wildflower hikes around. Way to squeeze out your turns for the month. Great pictures, great partner.

That's about the best thing I've seen on here in a long time, though I don't come on often anymore.
