FS: SA GPX Mastery Textured Series WF5F
I have a SA GPX Mastery Series Textured WF5F that has about 20 days on it. Not too keen on the texture.
In good shape, but I did cut off both end loops to nail knot to backing and to a mono butt section (butt section still attached).
Any interest from anyone? I have absolutely no idea on price - never sold used fly line before.
$30 shipped??

TC - great questions. All I have to offer is that is the way I was taught. Most of my first set-ups were hand-me-downs from my old man, and that's how he had 'em rigged. Old habits die hard I guess. I don't think there is any advantage over the mono butt section in lieu of a loop-to-loop leader directly to the fly line. I am sure there is a reason for it, but in the end, my technique sucks enough that I don't think any set-up provides more of an advantage over another.

I also use a short mono loop with a nail knot to the flyline. Makes a smaller knot that slides easier through the ferrules, and protects the end of your flyline. Even with new lines with a loop connection, I cut this off and tie on a mono section. I don't think one is better than the other, but tying nail knots is always fun

Sorry I don't want the line, but I'm curious -is it similar to the shark skin lines? What don't you like about it?

One of the things I hate most is when my welded loop breaks on the end of my fly lines. I feel as though the loop is smoother coming out of and into the eye due to the shape...and even if you tie a section of mono, most people do loop to loop anyhow, right?
I could never go back to hand tying my leaders onto the fly line and not being able to easily switch. I hear the new Orvis welded loop is greatly improved...I don't use Orvis lines, but might try one next time.
I really like the Sharkskin on my 6wt, other then how it cuts my fingers so I have to wear something on my stripping hand....not a huge fan of it on my 4wt...that was a mistake, but live and learn I guess."We had nice 3 days in your autonomous mountain realm last weekend." - Tom from Austria (the Rax ski guy)

I do love me a good nail knot. The textured isn't as abrasive as the sharkskin stuff which I had on a reel for about a year before this stuff. It is still a bit abrasive though - in the end, I always liked how it mended, but felt it didn't turn over well for my casting style (read: shitty). It does certainly shoot well though.
I agree with the above statements from you and gretch about a mono butt section moving through the end guide better too. I am a fan of the Knot Sense stuff to even further improve things - a little bubble on the nail knot and some on the perfection loop for the leader connection makes for smooth sailin'.

I cast like ass too. Self-taught years ago has led to bad habits that are a bitch to break. Throw in a couple of beers and things can get ugly! I have one sharkskin line that I pretty well so far, but I guess I'm not completely sold.
