This is more or less what you are describing. I agree though... Something completely redesigned, taking the best of both worlds and improving it is absolutely possible no matter how hard it would be to introduce a new norm into the market.simen@downskis.com DOWN SKIS

^^^ That's sort of what MFD's were designed to do, no? Of course, they still have some issues they're working out and the binding / plate combo is heavy.

IF it ever makes it to market the Trab binding could be it. Maybe Salomon should just buy Trab!

definitely possible with the more money. Wasn't the problem with "better" Dynafit binding from some Italian company that they needed a new norm and couldn't get boot mfg buy in? (don't remember the corp name was at tradeshows several years ago, lots of hype in tgr-land). Would be at least a couple season out though I'd think so I might give a shit in 3 years.

Supposedly it's protected by multiple patents. A quick search didn't turn any of them up, but they are mainly euro based. I don't think a direct copy of that mechanism is going to be possible. It would be interesting to dig up the patents, and check out the names on them, as that would give a better indication as to who was responsible for the actual development.

Sorry i'm late here, but would like to share a few thoughts...
- there are stellar skiers that just do not care that much about the gear they use. I know some of them, some have been mentioned here. From a company's perspective, they're ok for hype, not that much for gear design and validation.
- there are stellar skiers (again, mentioned here) that are sick about their gear. They are the best investment a company can make.... If the company listen to what they say. From my perspective, it's amazing that some companies do not listen to this people, but it happens, and seems to happen frequently...
- there is people that do not ski particularly well (or can hardly ski at all) but knows how to design and validate gear. The montebelluna and asolo area has the highest concentration in the world of ski boot designers, and at the present time very few people outside that area knows how to design good boots.
And yes, greg hill is unknown outside north america and federico is supposed to work for salomon in the running shoe dept

quoting Stephan Fritschi back in 2008, the numbers are probably higher but I still doubt that the North American sales really count for much in the grand scheme of things?
http://www.wildsnow.com/1075/rosti-p...factory-visit/
"the total number of AT bindings sold in a year (for all brands) is about 120,000. Most in Europe of course, with North America buying about the same number of units as an EU country such as Austria or France."
Isn't Greg Hill also a retired tree planter and the only way he could do that is get a real job or get a spancer with a large budget for advertising & product development ... good for Greg and i hope it works

..says the guy that joined two years ago...
Anyways, back on topic. I was gonna add stuff to the hate wagon that was being pulled by a few with a dearth of knowledge on the subject matter, but it seems like sensibility is finally taking its' course. Most of all which is the notion that guys like Hill aren't added necessarily because of their publicity, but because of their expertise, addiction to tech-fiddling and passion for the sport. Just think about this, Dumont was dropped, Hill was added. Publicity versus Product Development/Gear Nerdery. Logo Shots on TV versus Inside Respect. Like I said before, I'm stoked to be in the meeting rooms and in the backcountry with a guy like Greg. He'll bring an entirely different perspective to the team and program than what guys like Abma, Henrik and I add.
