Car Camping suggestions between Bozeman and Helena MT?

I don't know how many mags are checking the Ski forum in summer, or if this is the right place to post...

Flying into Bozeman on a Thursday and will have a rent-a-wreck to drive up to Helena by Saturday. Wanting to camp Friday night somewhere along (or out of) the way.

Any suggestions for places that are worth the time, not on fire, and in true dirtbag style - don't charge to stay there?

Camp at and visit Lewis and Clark caverns. They're pretty cool and can be on the way too.

Out of the way: Potosi near Pony, MT. Has a natural hot springs you can hike to near the campground. Norris hot springs is near there and is a neat place too. Serves beer and food in the pool.

    Is Pony still on fire?

Hyalite Reservoir just outside of Bozeman is a cool spot, but I never camp up there. I assume the usual FS fees apply at designated campgrounds, not sure if there's any primitive camping but I assume there is.
We heard you in our twilight caves, one hundred fathom deep below, for notes of joy can pierce the waves, that drown each sound of war and woe.

Hyalite will be crowded and it's not really on the way.
Lewis and Clark Caverns is always pretty amazing. If you have time, do the tour.
    No longer stuck.

2nd the Lewis and Clark spot.

30 years ago, my family would camp near Radersburg which is off the main road between Three Forks and Helena. Not too sure how far out of the way that might be for you or what the place is like now.

Just google mapped it. Campgrounds up Crow Creek road. I remember that they were Forest Service campgrounds.

Again, no idea if they still exist
