    Goon

I laughed out loud so fucking hard at this movie. WAYYYY better than the trailer would lead you to believe.

    It's streaming on netflix.

If you love hockey, prepare to be fully entertained. Having grown up playing and watching hockey - I've always had the hugest respect for the enforcers... this really felt like the first time somebody got a hockey movie right since Slapshot.

Honestly I loved Slapshot, it was a great flick by all standards - but even when I was a kid it felt dated. This feels like a very funny but real look at what seems to be a dying part of pro-hockey - but still a thriving part of farm league hockey.

    Enjoy.

Definitely a great hockey flick. Miles better than Slapshot.

    Whoa!

To each their own (and perhaps something was lost in translation?), but I just watched Goon and while entertaining, it's nowhere in the same league as Slapshot. Paul Newman was the man in that movie. And the Hanson Bros.? There weren't any characters even remotely as engaging as them in Goon.

Goon was entertaining, but it ain't the classic that Slapshot is.

    Again, to each their own.

While I enjoyed Goon, I have to say that I found Sean William Scott's performance a bit puzzling: he played the lead character as if he were a bit slow/dim-witted, yet the post-film footage of the actual guy upon which the film is based, Doug Smith, didn't lead me to believe that he was the least bit bit dim in the head (in real life Doug Smith went on to coach and then became a police officer after retiring from hockey, so he can't be that dull)..

I'm pretty new to hockey because we didn't have hockey growing up and it was only a few years ago that I started attending games as a spectator on a regular basis so I'm super intrigued with the game at the moment. A great movie to watch over a few beers and if you're into hockey at all it won't waste your time. It has a little chick flick romance built in and some good clean fighting etc. Nothing super special but I really enjoyed it for what it was.

I think that's sorta the problem with reading too much into "based on a true story" because then you're lead to believe that this guy IRL did all this stuff... when clearly it's a work of fiction based extraordinarily loosely on this guy.

I felt that his performance or perhaps it was the director's choice - was really genuinely enjoyable. I won't go too much further into as I don't want to spoil the plot - but I liked the choice.
