This thread made me nostalgic. I got my first mountain bike at City Bikes in Adams Morgan, years before the Park Service closed Rock Creek Park to bikes. The Watershed, GWNF and Elizabeth Furnace and the 24 Hours of Canaan, memory lane!

The Bright Morning Inn in Davis, WV - which has awesome breakfast. Or the Purple Fiddle down the road in Thomas, which has bluegrass, nice sandwiches, and microbrew. They are both B and Bs. There are also camper cabins and lodges in the state parks out there. Blackwater Falls State Park is one. Canaan Valley State Park is the other one. Both tend to book up a ways in advance.

Impending departure. Anyone have any last minute wisdom? Gonna hit Dupont, Pisgah and Bent Creek; Tsali; Douthat; Slatyfork and Davis/Cannan. Got digs in Asheville, Nashville and Davis, WV- camping the rest of the way. Thanks folks, i'll post pics.

Douthat was closed about a month ago due to damage from the derecho. I'd be very surprised if they hadn't cleaned up by now, but it might be worth a call to be sure. Also, camping there fills up pretty early, so you may want to check on that as well. When will you be hitting Douthat?

If you're feeling like some fancier food, I suggest The Market Place in Asheville. The chef/owner is a good friend and one hell of a chef. In Davis, we've been having consistently good breakfasts at Flying Pigs (in Thomas). Also had a surprisingly good breakfast at Amelia's off Cortland Rd in the valley. It lacks the soul of spots in Davis and Thomas, but the whole fly-in resort thing is pretty interesting, and their cinnamon rolls are dank.

Edit: Looks like Douthat is good to go. Pretty impressive effort given the reported amount of damage and the extensive trail network.

What are your dates for Nashville?

When you hit DuPont get coffee/breakfast at the Flat Rock bakery. Cool little bike friendly spot.

Have fun in Pisgah. Watch out for abortion bombers hiding from the law.

Any suggestions for: Slatyfork trailheads, Douthat area campgrounds or Frederick trails? Sirshred? Cant? Bagtag? BrianH? Thanks y'all. The Southern Mtns are really special, thanks for all the help so far.

There's an RV campground about a mile outside the Douthat entrance that has some tent sites. That's the only option I'm aware of, but there may be others. Clifton Forge is nearby if you get desperate and need a hotel.

My favorite ride there is part of the race course. Go up Stony Run from the road, drop down to the Tuscarora Overlook and enjoy the view. Climb back up to Middle Mountain and drop down Salt Stump. Head up Ross Camp on the opposite side. If you're itching for some steep climbing, you can head up Mountain Top Trail. To me, it's a lot of effort for minimal reward, so I usually do Mountain Side instead. Then get on Brushy Mountain, enjoy another amazing view when you peak out, then bomb back down. If you've still got some juice, the lower trails on the West side are fun to play around on. Tobacco House Ridge is a short, but really fun decent.

Wish I could join you guys. Haven't been to Douthat since early last year.

Douthat=Sick. I love climbing almost 2,500 straight up on the east coast, almost as much as the descent. So beautiful to boot: Click image for larger version.
