When you have cages on your pedals or clipless you can lock your legs and skid the bike to a stop or you can use back pressure to slow down. If you don't have cages and your foot slips off trying to stop quick your are rightly fucked. Getting your feet back on pedals that are moving with no freewheel isn't as easy as it sounds.
