    What's this bike worth?

I'm trying to sell my Dad's old road bike. I don't know shit about road bikes. Full shimano 600 set. On both shifters the little trigger doesn't work. Everything else is in damn fine condition for a bike this old.

That's circa 1990-92, based on the 600 Ultegra and quill stem. Also, I had a Specialized Epic from 1993 (carbon tubes, aluminum lugs), so that's a familiar-looking bike. Mine had a "Direct Drive" aluminum fork, and your fork looks to be the same one.

    $250-300 seems about right.

The STI shifters on my '93 bike were 105, and tended to get a little gummy too. You can probably clean up the shifters with a little WD40 and get them shifting smoothly again.

x2. early 90's, decent steel frame, 8 speed, and needs work...
The blues has always been about taking your problems and turning them into something you can dance to, drink to and fuck to.
We're certainly not a blues band in any kind of purest sense, but to me Rock and Roll has always had it's roots in that tradition.

I'd say a bit less; $200 ish. A newer and fully functional road bike can be had for ~$400 without too much trouble.

That was my first road bike. It actually rode really well for the money. $250- $300 is a reasonable price now.

Thanks guys. Pretty much exactly what I thought it would be worth, just wanted to make sure.

If the WD40 doesn't work to fix the shifter do I dare take it apart? Or is it a lost cause?

try to see if it moves, without a shifter cable. might be the cable and housing is REALLY gummed up?
if not, you really can't make it work any worse? try taking it appart and see?

You can take those front caps off to access the internals better. Use a degreaser/air compressor and blast the fuck out of them while shifting through. Then re-lube and they most likely be good all to go.

In Seattle you could probably get 4-500 for it but there are a lot of idiots here. Depends how many idiots there are where you live.

If the bike has good everything and does not need work (mentioning the gummy shifters) then I'd say $250- just because of the STI. If it needs anything, then I'd say $200. Just as a bit of comparison- I purchased a 2002 Specialized Allez Sport (9 speed STI, carbon fork, Ultregra bottom bracket) for $450 a few years ago. It was aluminium frame though not steel, so if you find the right person, steel still has some followers. Unfortunately sometimes the parts on these older bikes are worth more than the fully assembled bike...
