Wow! I'm spending the early summer in Plumas County and I'm blown away. uhhhhh......why doesn't anybody fly fish around here? Granted, the terrain is a little tougher than my home waters of western WY but it is going to be easy to get real spoiled spending whole days fishing great water with short access times and having it all to yourself. The water is already getting warm, but it looks like most of it comes from springs that keep their temperatures constant year round. Does anyone know if the fish in bigger water like the Middle and North Forks of the Feather stay through the summer, or do they start hanging out in the headwater creeks come hot weather? Stay tuned for more rambling and hopefully a pic or two of an area that doesn't seem to be on the radar for fly fishers.... but sure as hell could be. (Anybody else enjoying this area and just keeping tight lipped about it?)

The middle/north fork feather fish well through the end of june and into july. Good hatches should start to pop as soon the weather warms back up later in the week. The North Yuba can be fun although fish are smaller. If you like stillwater Davis and Frenchmans should be good for another month or so still. Lot's of other small streams and lakes to poke around. Drive over to the Truckee for a day too for a chance at some big fish. There's a book called the Plumas Trout guide that recently went out of print that's a great resource.

Heh. I worked on the Plumas NF for a number of years in the 70s and fly fished the shit out of it...but I rarely saw anyone else. I'd hit Spanish Fork (I think that was it) in the evening or if I was up in the hills, some of the creeks around Antelope Lake. And on weekends hike into the W&S part of the Middle Fork, where it was almost always awesome. I remember some good fishing on the N. Fork near Seneca as well.
Enjoy, you're in a Good Place.
