Fucking Drivetrains
2010 Trek Fuel ex6, stock drivetrain 3x9
Went down hard on Tuesday and then got the chain caught between the crank and the frame somehow. Disconnected it and re ran it through the rear derailleur improperly (rubbing on the little piece inside the cage between the pulleys). Fixed it when I got home. Went to ride yesterday (thursday) and bike would slip in the middle 3 gears of the cassette. Additionally, it like the derailleur may not be in the proper alignment. Is this just a case of alignment and barrel adjustment? Something more serious? I'm trying to figure this stuff out so that I don't have to keep relying on the LBS, but will bring it in if I have to.
I also noticed that I'm missing a tooth on the second smallest ring on the cassette. Not sure when I lost it, but it seemed fine. Can I still ride that cassette, or is it time for a replacement? Just replace the ring? It's not tragic to die doing what you love.

Did you go down hard on the drivetrain side? Check for bent derailleur. If not bent, then check alignment and treat the rear to a full adjustment, lots of places to look up the basic steps online. It sounds likely that some minor adjustment of the barrel screw will help fix th eproblem., but before you attempt that definitely check for bent cage, and check tath upper and lower limit screws are properly set.

You probably bent your chain.

It worked fine the rest of that ride. Wonder if I bent the derailleur putting it into or taking it out of the car after. Can I untwist it if this is the case?

Easy killer. You might be able to take the bend out of the derailleur but easy does it. I bent the RD on my road bike when it decided to take a spin in the spokes on a steep climb. I tried to bend it back, off the bike. Just a little too much and pop... well I guess I wanted a new RD after all.

Maybe.
You should see what the derailleur on my sx trail looks like. It's a first gen XO thing that's been on probably 4 dh bikes. There's no reason whatsoever it should work but since it doesn't have the word shimano on it anywhere, it does in fact work.
Figure out your real problem before torquing in anything first though.STRAVA: Enabling dorks everywhere to get trails shut down........ all for the sake of a race on the internet.

More likely the hanger than the derailleur.
Second the sentiment on the old XO, totally indestructible and always just works. There's nothing better than sliding down snow and flying through the air.

wedged chain between the chainrings and frame usually equals twisted/bent chain. inspect each link closely, you might find one link is jacked

it sounds uncomfortable, nuts swinging against the derailleur and pubes caught in the cassette. have at it, though.
