Good-bye Little Cloud double...Hello high speed quad
I'm sure that everyone interested has heard that Sunday will mark the last day ever that you can ride the Little Cloud "double" chair, as next year, it will be replaced by a high speed quad. Personally, I will miss the exposed uber gusty winds and the old plastic seats. (Hopefully, down the line, I can buy one for ~$75). Anyway, try to make it to Snowbird Sunday, so you can tell your children how you rode the old slow double chair on its last day of existence.

Barf. As if the bird doesn't get tracked out fast already. The real pain begins when they replace gad2 though. I'd be a fan if they extended it further up the ridgeline but it doesn't look likely.

This is awesome. Road to provo already gets tracked out in a heartbeat, but remains soft for a long time, it will still get tracked out in a heartbeat, but you'll be able to get laps much quicker while its soft, if youre a fast skier. Faster skiers will get more laps meaning as it gets tracked out it might even bump up a tiny bit less. Also, fuck the fucking tram most of the time when theres a wait and its packed full, ski school road to gadzoom to little cloud will probably now be faster than waiting for the tram on a lot more days, as well as less boring. Also, the gadzoom to little cloud ride will be much less cold for the top part.

There's no question that the chair needs to be replaced and it should help the Tram line as around-the-worlds will now be faster and more comfortable. But there is no reason to make it a high speed quad. Currently there is only a line for one hour on a powder day right after the road opens and there is already not enough room on the ridge where the chair unloads. Imagine a blue-bird powder day, the road-to-provo opens and the Tram skiers are coming down the south ridge only to run into TRIPLE the skiers standing in the way.
I think a triple would have been fine, or if it's going to be a quad, then why not take it all the way to hidden peak?

Wow, so its gonna get skiied out even quicker? I guess I left just in time, probably wont be going back there at this rate.....
I think an up to date double or triple would be sweet, but a quad is just going to make a crowded area on a pow day that much worse. I hope that they don't put a quad into Gad2 or else it will be ruined forever. Best part of that side of the mountain is Tiger Tail anyways....

not only is the terrain going to get crushed, people will realize how boring that shit is up there alot quicker. but its a double that accesses an area that high speed lifts get you to. the real trajedy will be gad zoom turning into a quad. bird will officially be the most tracked out resort in the world then.

I'm all for slower lifts. Makes for less crowded slopes. See Mad River Glen. Who gives a shit if a lift is cold? That makes for less wusses on the lift and trails.

A case of old fix grip doubles
I agree, Old doubles keep the snow untacked longer, it gives you time to smoke a bowl with a friend and discuss the next run. Wild cat at Alta, Jupiter at PCMR, the long slow double at Solitude are all classic doubles that open up tons of great runs. The snow stays better longer! Oh well we can always ski the backcountry........WAIT you mean Talisker just bought the Wasatch!?!? FUCK!!!

So a double chair, the terrain gets tracked out slower, but it takes you longer to get to the top, while the powder is getting tracked, you are also waiting in a line... isnt it just a wash at that point?

The faster you ski, the more you benefit from a higher speed lift, and the more a faster lift will help you ski more pow. If youre old fat and out of shape, yea a slow ass lift to give you a rest and slow down to the flow of people is what you want, but fuck those guys, if you ski fast, a faster lift will get you more powder skiing before it gets tracked. End of story.
Besides, not all days are pow days, for days that dont get tracked out like windbuff or corn days, having a high speed lift there will be money. Those are ussually the best days at the bird anyways, the sleeper days.__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ________________

^^^ except for the fact that while you might turn lap times in 75% of the time it used to take, there'll be 2 riders for everyone there used to be so in effect it'll mean faster skiers get screwed less... but everyone gets screwed.

there will be 4 x the skiers. since the quad will probably be twice as fast as the double

I think the biggest difference this lift will make is that it will add to the junkshow in mineral.. thumping skiers over the ridge at an even faster rate.
But as for the effect on little cloud bowl? On a rope drop on a busy day people are pouring in from the tram and mineral lift, not just a slow 2 person fixed grip. Yes it will "track out" quicker but you will be spending less time in the giant mob at the bottom of the lift, netting the same or more amount of runs. And on the days when they open road to provo a day or two after the storm, no one is there anyways so it doesnt really matter.
I'm all for snowbird upgrading the lifts, even Gad2. Gad2 really has the only true intermediate runs at snowbird, and a high speed over there makes it more appealing for Mr and Mrs Gaper. More gapers = more money for everyone.
Plus I'm thinking riding single on zoom and little cloud will be the the ticket on high crowd days for fast laps. Only thing I would like to see is the LC loading station be high enough to be able to make it to baldy, but I dont think thats possible unless they took it to the peak.

Yes, as it is, rope drop on RtP on a busy day, and if you're there, you get one run, then the line at the bottom of little cloud is long enough you might as well just go to gad2 or back to the tram at that point, by the time you get back up there somehow shit is tracked. This will make it so if youre fast you can get 2 maybe even 3 runs in before its tracked.

They really just need to expand to other ridgelines and avoid having one peak. That will be the only way to disperse crowds more. Tram, LC, mineral all dump you in about the same spot. This is why it can be argued that Brighton and the Canyons stays fresh longer, even if the terrain is less awesome.

won't the fast skiers jack themselves up faster thus removin them from the slopes

Remind me again why anyone would be super concerned about RTP gettin tracked out? I'm not saying I'm some super badass professional skier but what vert is really offered over there unless you're gonna hike pipeline? If nothing else, the quad will take more gapers that way, keeping the untracked available elsewhere. There are plenty of other gems at the bird and I'm not too worried about this quad hurting them. If nothing else, it'll be a quicker way to the top / circque / gad shoots when all the outa towners are ridings the tram just to say they did and then come down Chips.

I hope we get a gift shop up top too. and a hot chocolate machine.
bitches love gift shops. There will still be a line at the gates by road to provo on a pow day waiting for patrol to open it. Road to provo will probably be much wider/more defined this year due to the increased traffic.
i bet more people will get ran over too.
