TR: Up high in the EC
Low snow year is curtailing the usual long spring season for the presidentials here on the EC. Tree well dweller, myself and non mag friend Nick set out for the 4k+ vert hike to the summit of Mt Washington. Plan was to hike up the cog, ski some laps in the north east snow fields, ski airplane gully in the Great Gulf, then head north along the gulf side trail to meet the jewell trail then take the jewell back down to the valley, nice long loop especially with gear, skis, and boots on your back.
Hiking up we did not let the pea soup sully our spirits, we knew it was an undercast with blue skies beaming up top

Nick checking out the fog rolling over Burt Ravine
Cog in action
Andy and Nick on the stair master humming "standy by me"
But this is what they had to look forward to, blue skies ahead
We got to the head wall and saw more snow then we expected, and the corn was perfectly cycled

Perfect weather window day and the canvas was ours
Looking over towards hillmans highway and tuckerman ravine areas
Up for some more
out to the next objective
unfortunately both did not go anymore, which was fine by us it was late and the prior skiing was stellar
So we headed north to complete the loop out
Looking back towards the cog, burt ravine, ammo ravine, and Mt Monroe
descending along the Jewell down to the valley
Great day out, 10 hours later back at the lot. Cold Heady Toppers awaited, thanks to TWD.

Thanks for the TR. I hope that the snowfields hold up for another two weeks so I can hit them. Airplane looks good too -- now. Looking low though.
I was in Left Gully yesterday. The corn was delicious.

Looks like fun. I'm surprised how little snow is up there.

nice trip report, man. repost in in the hiking forum.
a long slog for some solid corn, nothing wrong with that. always worth it to be in the high alpine on a day like yesterday.
arriving at the base station with the sun setting and super moon rising was a nice way to finish it.

GG is usually prime around now. Too bad about the snow this year, but at least you got some good turns in. Next spring for me...already looking forward to it.

great shots, tasty corn.
I love to see people still getting after it in May, even after the lean snowpack.

I said "4k+ vert hike", said nothing about a tour. Hikes are about hiking
That said, lapping the snow fields is fun as hell in some of the best corn you will ever ski, a suffer fest to hike there and back, which you would enjoy, prick.
Aaron if you get back early enough lets head up.Last edited by thin cover; 05-06-2012 at 08:11 PM.

Way to get after it, I am super jealous - did you guys travel on the AT at all?"In a perfect world I'd have all 10 fingers on my left hand, so I could just use my right hand for punching."

nice pics and report.
looks like a nice day to be out...wish i could have gotten up there, but must say it was really nice to not have to pack gear, get up before sunrise, drive many hours - and many hours back. first entire weekend home in about 5 months. even got to watch mad men!
cleaned the sand and mud off my skis yesterday.
yea, short of that big dump in may, i'm ready to look ahead to october.
therefore, no storage wax til june

Yeah HA likes to talk shit
We were on the gulf trail for a bit, which circumnavigates the summit of Clay. The gulfside is part on the AT that accesses the northern presidentials from the southern. we got off the gulf side before it meets with sphinx col and then heads north to Jefferson, which is visible in one of the shots above

I was wondering about how much snow was up there as I'm planning on doing the traverse this Saturday. I guess this TR answers that question.
BTW, I'll try and drop off the pack either tomorrow or Wednesday this week.No kick turns
No mercy

I am always talkin shit, but only about you TC...
Glad you guys ended your season with some nice corn, how was the hike down with your knee? Wish I could have made it, that hike would of been good training for the sufferfest that PW7 is taking me on in July.. Might have to do some over nighters up there this summer.

Nicely done Dalt!
Sad to see how little snow is left up there so early in the season. Mother nature really screwed us this season. At least there was the chic chocs!Magic Mountain Freeride Team...bringing your grom's game to the next level.

Sweet
That must have been a killer hike though. I struggled with the 2 day hike in and out of the ravine, I can only imagine...
Sucks that Airplane is done - that is my favorite destination for slackfest - so it sounds like no slackfest for me this year
