i dont know that it is really "bad", its just that it was in prime shape before this last storm and now it isnt as smooth as it could be. i think the remnants of darkstar and crews or others pow trax a week ago could account for some of the carnage off the top and those little icy chicken heads are on some north exposures. i think a week or 2 of melt/freeze could smooth things out and kill the chicken heads.
h - i dont know the elevation but its plain as day. there is a large buttress u will come to right about at treeline. clr crk route goes climbers left of it and the wintun ridge route is left and/or on it. climb up the clear creek route and then either ski back down it or the wintun glacier. after skiing the glacier just traverse skiers right on the only obvious snow ramp there and just keep working right till you are under the buttress again and the obvious clr crk ridge route is below you. about 8k and 18 miles as you are parking at 6k and a mile out from the th right now.

Old sastrugi with windboard/variable funkiness. Very unsmooth. Just go and do Wintun. The upper chute off peak really wasn't that bad except for a few firm chicken heads but I bailed out skiers right early as possible onto Wintun to get maximum smoothness.

Looks like a buddy and I are headed up this this Sunday through Wednesday to ski. We were thinking Brewer Creek TH. Anyone have any thoughts on what is going to ski best. (I know its a ways out..) Would a 107 or 88 underfoot ski be nest for right now? Thanks for the beta.

Tyfalk - I skied down the AG (Left of Heart) the first weekend in May on Coombacks (106 underfoot) and it was fine. They obviously didn't deal well with the sastrugi and chickenheads that I found above 12k, but what does? I would go for the skinnier boards if they're lighter - width isn't going to do you much good in June!
Was thinking of a quick solo attempt on the H-W route driving up tonight but the winds/clouds tomorrow look nasty, 85mph gusts called for tomorrow and then it's only getting worse in terms of precip, and winds on Sunday.

The Wintun delivered on Friday. I saw in person what BG and gimpy said about the Hotlum - just bumpy. But the Wintun skied great from the top down - skied off the windless and peopleless summit about 11 AM. Road added < 1 mile in my opinion and is melting out fast. Hopefully the forecasted snow smooths out the rest of the mountain.

Holy crap they just doubled the previous forecast totals. Woot! I'm going Wednesday and have an ambitious plan which should work well with how this storm comes in to get legit pow turns...hopefully.

Looks like my Thursday/Friday/Saturday window to do Shasta will be hosed by high winds. Is there a side of the mountain or a route that tends to be better wind-sheltered?

Ended up taking the trip to Shasta despite questionable weather forecasted for last Sunday through Wednesday. Drove up to Brewer Creek Trailhead and made it a little less than a mile from the trailhead. Skininig through heavy snow and occasional thunder. Not feeling very good about out decision at this point.

The storm fizzled out sometime late that night and gave way to a beautiful morning.

3Pinnah enjoying the bluebird morning.

Clouds rolling in on us so we choose to descend. The new snow was about boot deep, higher density but still skied well.

We didn't see anyone get up too high on our side of the mountain the days we were there until Wednesday. A group of two looked to make it Wednesday afternoon when we were on the way out.

Mika getting after it. BMF in the PNW!!

All smiles on the perfect corn exit. We skied all the way to the car little less than a mile from the Brewer Creek trailhead.

I'm planning to drive up there on the 16th, with June 17th-19th available to ski, eyeing the winturn route. Rolling solo if anyone wants to meet up.
How are road conditions?
