Looks fun. Shasta is one of my favorite skis early in the summer.

How did Shasta do in terms of snowfall this winter? It's right between Tahoe (horrific year) and the northwest (solid year).

Nice pics and info, man! It looked like a great day to be out there. When are you planning to summit?

Avalanche center called it %100 of normal. Chris Carr just put a rad blog post up about skiing with Rhalves, Dav, etc http://shastaguides.com/2012/05/07/w...-volcano-tour/

I'll be up there several - many times over the next few months. Don't have any plans other than utilizing access as it opens.
Gonna stay away from the south side.
Lots of midweek solo trips are in my future unless anyone else has Tue/Wed's available.

Definitely looking to hit up Shasta this spring. Since it's been a couple years since I've been out, I kind of feel like I need to do a warm up on Lassen. You been on those slopes this spring at all, and/or heard what the conditions are like?

My folks have a place in Dunsmuir, dad's been skiing on Shasta all spring. He said for the most part conditions have been really good up until the last couple days when it didn't get cold at night. He's a bit of a hack so he sticks to mellower lines but the melt/freeze has been somewhat consistent. Sounds like even avy gulch is holding up pretty well. Will be there Sunday deciding between the west side and hotlam-bolam, anybody been on the north?

Thanks for the motivation Jibmaster. Headed up and did the West Face last Sat., 12may12. Awesome conditions. Full TR here. Tease below:

West Face won't last long. Bolam Glacier looks very good if you can get the weather to cooperate - not too warm and no wind.

Was up there the past two days.
Met a friend from Tahoe in town, just outside the 5th Season.
    Roger and his buddy Seth.
They had just come down from the Diller TH to fix a leaking tire.
I suggested that we head to the north side.
We could all hop in my Jeep to get up to the 'other' north side TH.
Where I was a couple weeks ago.
3 miles in on Military Pass Rd., his rear differential blows up.
So we camp out down at 5000'.
We were planning on skiing the next day (yesterday)
and dealing with the vehicle afterwards.

But after waking up, Roger decides he needs to
    deal with the vehicle situation.

7 hours later, we finally get a driver willing to
pick up the vehicle on the dirt road.

Don't use Bills towing - he won't drive on the dirt roads
    to retrieve your vehicle.
Fred from Yreka was willing, but not very happy.
He said he almost turned around.
Were were at 42N18 - only 2.7 miles from the 97.
If your vehicle breaks down way in there,
    YOU ARE SCREWED!!!

We left the vehicle @ J&B's in Weed and I drove them down
to Sacramento, where Seth's girlfriend picked them up
to take them back to Tahoe.
I drove back to Napa Valley. Got home by 9:30pm.

So all I got are some pics.

Roger using my 'infidel' phone to summon help.

Both cell phones died - not much connection anyways.

    Some of my favorites.

Is the Brewer Creek trailhead open yet? If not how close can you get? Thanks for the beta....

No, still 2-3 miles out at least according to the 5th season.

Bunny flat was a total zoo today, well over a hundo rigs there by afternoon, I know it get's get crowded but the Unofficial and Powmag posts had to have brought people out. License plates from all over the country. Good vibes all around.
Lot's of TGR stickers around too, hopefully mags are getting some. The snow is still pretty good despite the intermittent cloud cover the last few days, the goods are slowly creeping higher though. Back at it tomorrow.

Soooo, knowing nothing about Shasta and never have been there I was wondering what, if anything, I could ski solo, without crampons or an axe?

Im not a climber, mountaineer or a good person in general, but I would like to do some skiing in the next week or 2.
As far as previous experience, Ive pretty much only dicked around St.Marys Glacier and Mt.Evans in Colorado, only skinning and boot-packing up a couple grand of mellow slope with little to no exposure.

I am waiting for my job to start in Redding and cant journey too far away in case we do start, so was looking to explore my new backyard.

I am in pretty good shape from riding my bike like crazy, but havent taken my BC gear out all season, except on Alpines closing weekend, but that was only because my other gear was safely locked away for the summer.

Not looking to go crazy or anything, just want to make some turns again and do some camping.

oh yeah, i am doing some research myself, just wanted to tap into the wealth of knowledge here if possible

Brewer Creek is perfect right now. Just follow the creek (Brewer Creek) up from the road down lower. Or you could hit up the north side. Some really nice steeps down low at the North Gate TH. I call them the North Gate Chutes.

There is a great camp site down lower from the TH @ Brewer Creek.
Wonderful views of the mountain. Big clearing.

Yo Brannen, just head up to bunny flat with your normal BC rig and start skinning up. Eventually once you hit the tree line you'll be able to pick a place and go. Lookers right of avy gulch get's less dicked up by climbing traffic. Lot's of folks out there solo. Not super gnar but super fun corn cycle firing right now. Above 10.5k you're supposed to have a FS permit. Looks like it might even snow a tad this week.

gotta be some of the best skiing in the lower 48 right now and it keeps getting refreshed. you thought it was a zoo this weekend, wait till next (memorial day). and all ya gotta do to avoid the bunny flat crowds is go to a diff th or go midweek. most of shasta is pretty benign and the biggest problem seems to be folks just getting lost.

Looked like some weather moving in the next few days Jibmaster. Temps are supposed to drop substantially, might even get a little bit of precip.
