Thread: Shasta summer 2012

Looks like the window for stuff up high is gonna be closed for a while as the forecast looks pretty crappy even through Memorial weekend. But like gimpy said it should be nice and refreshed when the next weather window shows up. Time to start planning for some HotTuna. When that run pops off the peak it's as good as it gets. Gonna have to keep mountain biking to maintain my Shasta legs!

Fine BG, I'll stay home!

Dammit!
I hope it does this all summer long. A few years ago, it snowed up there every week during the summer.
Freshies next week!

thanks for the beta
looks like the weather turned to poop this week with 100mph winds before the storm, bummer. hopefully fires start burning somewhere so i can get to work, but if they dont all is not lost, it sounds amazing up there.
not sure if this was from here or not, but this has helped me out quite a bit

It's pretty open. Plus the creek bed is usually clear.

Heading up to Bunny Flats late today, planning on climbing Avi Gulch and skiing the west face tomorrow. Thursday maybe do a different route or Lassen.
If anyone wants company send an email to my handle @gmail or just look for the weathered old mercedes with blue rp112s sitting shotgun.

Hotlum Wintun is in terrible shape. Not even worth riding the upper/best part of the ridge. The Wintun glacier proper is nice though. Lower HW had some good turns too. That new snow did more bad than good on the east side imo. It was sticky and variable. I came home instead of riding another day due to lower than expected snow quality (I have high standards for slogging up huge mountains fwiw). Perfect day however with not even a breeze to make everything soft off the peak although it was a bit ragged for the first 300 feet.

bg - agreed on the state of the h/w man. sorry i couldnt get word to ya but my phone was dead till i got home. the east side did look better before this last storm. we ended up just skiing the wintoon glacier all the way back to clear creek which was really good. the only really good turns i found up high were in the trinities and the summit pocket chutes. the wintoon didnt get really good till we were in the maw of the glacier.
dnklauer -- i was rappin w/ yer crew on the summit block on monday. we came from clear creek

Ha! I saw your tracks on lower Wintun wrapping back around to Clear Creek. I remember thinking that's a neat idea. Wintun was pretty damn good compared to how HW looked. I always wanted to ride it as it's a great fall line off the peak. I milked it almost to the bottom and then hopped over a moraine and milked some good turns on lower HW. I also found a great approach after some hiking around the woods the previous afternoon that involved an unmarked skid road that took me straight to the upper portion of the Brewer Cr gully. It only took me a little over an hour to reach treeline from the car. Only a 1/2 hour of hiking each way to skinnable snow too. Left car at 4:00 and summited at 11:10. Dropped at noon and was back to car at 1:10.

Surprised to hear that about HW - never seen it in "bad" shape early in the season. Can you describe it a bit more? Like just not smooth? Windblown? Sastrugi? The Wintun always does look really fun to stay on. About what elev did you cut back to Clear Creek TH?
