I meant that Paul's Boutique is one of my favorite albums, of all albums/cds - not just my favorite Beastie. It's literally in my top 10.

As my friend Bob Lefsetz says: "Paul's Boutique" was so far ahead of what was in the marketplace that it took many years to catch up with it. If it had been on Sony instead of Capitol, it would have been just as big as the debut. Still, the music lives on.

I got more rhymes than I got gray hairs and that's a lot because I got my share...

But like a dream I'm flowing without no stopping
Sweeter than a cherry pie with ready whip topping
Goin' from mic to mic kickin' it wall to wall
Well i'll be calling out you people like a casting call

I'm pretty damn sure that he's riding some sick, heavenly lines right about now with a big a$$ smile on his face.

Mucho gracias for the good rhymes Mr. Yauch!

Especially considering how radical a departure it was from "Licensed to Ill."

In regards to PB, I remember reading an article about the Beastie Boys in The Source around the time that Check Your Head dropped. Folks like Hank (or maybe it was Keith) Shocklee and other top-notch producers were interviewed and they all admitted that PB was one of those albums that they wouldn't fess up to owning, but secretly they all had multiple copies of and would lock themselves in the studio and try and figure out what the f@#k the Beastie Boys and the Dust Brothers had sampled. That album set the benchmark for sampling.

And, yes, MCA was a boarder. I wrote an article for their short-lived magazine Grand Royal once and in the same issue MCA had a long piece about him taking an entire year off to ride all over the world. It was a sick article.

Pretty much floored when I heard the news. My life's soundtrack is a good way to put it. From the beginning.

I typically couldn't care when a celeb passes, but this is so different.

Here's to a wonderful new life MCA. Peace be with you.

I remember picking up that magazine at the Grand Royal store in Portland. Such a great magazine.

I only got to see them one time, on the Hello Nasty tour. Tribe Called Quest opened at the Salt Palace. Amazing show from both groups. The Beastie Boys have been a huge part of my life for around 25 years. MCA will be missed. I have been listening to all their albums all weekend.

If it weren't for the Beastie, Beastie Beastie Boys, what would I have requested at my high school dances? Fucking Duran Duran?

Anyone at that show at the Tacoma Dome in maybe 94 or 95 when someone shot a flaming arrow into the ceiling (largest WOODEN dome arena anywhere)? That show killed it. RIP MCA.

All MCA: A Year and a Day (live from 1992):

M.C. for what I AM and do
The A is for Adam and the lyrics; true
So as pray and hope and the message is sent
And I AM living in the dreams that I have dreamt
Because I'm down with the three the unstoppable three
Me and Adam and D. were born to M.C.
And my body and soul and mind are pure
Not polluted or diluted or damaged beyond cure
Just lyrics from I to you recited
Arrested, bailed but cuffed and indicted
Enter the arena as I take center stage
The lights set low and the night has come of age
Take the microphone in hand as that I am a professional
Speak my knowledge to the crowd and the ed. is special
For I AM a bard but not the last one
I'm my own king and this is my castle
Dwell in realms of now but vidi those of the past
Seen a glimpse from ahead and I don't think it's gonna last
And you can bet your ass

I'm fishing with my boat and I'm fishing for trout
Mix the Bass Ale with the Guiness Stout
Fishing for a line inside my brain
And looking out at the world through my window pane
Every day has many colors cuz the glass is stained
Everything has changed but remains the same
So once again the mirror raised and I see myself as clear as day
And I AM going to the limits of my ultimate destiny
Feeling as though Somebody were testing me
He who sees the end from the beginning of time
Looking forward through all the ages is, was and always shall be

Just listened to Paul's Botique on the drive to work... been a long time since I listened to that. I forgot how awesome the sampling/beats were in that. At the time (sorry, I was way too young), those must have been way more complex than anything out there.

Egg Man - what a jam!

Paul's Boutique was and is more complex than anything out there then or now. Only other albums, imho, that are almost as progressive in terms of sampling are 3rd Bass' Derelicts of Dialect and De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising.

And thanks to tillPOWdidwepart for posting that ESPN piece. That was a nice, heartfelt obit.
