    MPC #84 - Transportation - 4/30-5/14

I'm looking to keep this MPC pretty wide open with the hopes of getting as many folks as possible to pick up their cameras and give it a go.

Transportation can be a method to get from point A to point B, the act of transporting something, forms of transportation, it's pretty wide open.

Not a bad topic to play around with TV mode and some panning shots or precariously mounted cameras to capture a POV. Or some new awesome technique no one has yet discovered.

    Bring it!

    RULES:
    1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.
    2. You may submit 3 photos during the contest.
    3. The contest moderator will choose 5 photos to be voted on.
    4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way, not an option.)
    5. In the event of a tie, the contest moderator will have the deciding vote.
    6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.
    7. The winner has 3 days to start a new contest or 2nd place becomes the new winner.

How in the fuck can you people motion blur a bike or car handheld without the subject coming out all fucked up and blurred? Tried for half hour yesterday at different shutter speeds etc. Going to have to keep practicing that one.

It's about relative motion, make sure they aren't getting closer or further as you pan and they should stay sharp.

You ride next to them at the same speed and use VR/IS or pan from stationary position using VR/IS, or use a flash with rear curtain sync.

What speeds were you trying? My favorite for panning cars is 1/80, though certainly depends how fast they're moving. Good form and steady breathing are key, but it takes a good amount of luck as well. I was shooting an autocross on the 29th so unfortunately those are a day too early, but I'll try something similar this weekend.

There it is right there....that's the problem I was having as I was also trying to zoom follow aswell. Going to try again.

Can't remember exactly but they weren't very long.

You can still get a good shot even if your subject is moving relative to your position -- you just need to make sure that when you press the shutter, the subject is at the right distance to be in focus. Using a small aperture (large DoF) obviously helps (which you probably will be doing anyway to get a slow shutter speed). As bfree said, a good firm stance + steady breathing along with smooth tracking helps. And lots of practice. I had to shoot a ton of burst frames before I got this one of my son on a revolving & rotating tire swing (shot @ 16mm, f/20, 1/40sec).

Haven't had a chance to get our for this one yet, but when I do the panning shots I have in mind will either involve a diy mount or a tripod and a remote trigger..

It's a technique that's new to me too, and handheld shaking seems like an easy factor to discount and avoid..

Who knows tho, I have to get out and try it b4 I can really add anything significant to the conversation.. hopefully tomorrow!

VR/IS cant really help too because most systems have a panning detect mode which will stabilize movement along one axis, making the panning smoother.

oh man dfinn, you're making me miss UT. Spend my first whole day riding this weekend since moving back East last fall and it's just not the same out here. Make sure you go riding up in Lava Hot Springs, ID if you haven't already.

Moto around lava? I've spent a bunch of time up there but the majority if that has been being lazy in hot springs. I should bring blue with me next time I go?

I've eaten at that one. The one in Lava blows it away but in all fairness, it's no longer an operating gas station. It's a former gas station turned thai food.

Oh yeah, there's some great riding up there. We did two days while staying in town in Lava.

First day we drove down to Grace, took a left in town and headed towards the mountains. Parked up on some dirt road and just headed up. Once you get on the spine, there's a trail there that goes all the way down to Logan. We just rode south all day until we were beat and then spit ourselves out onto the pavement and rode back to the truck up rt 34.

Second day we were heading back to the same place but we were fueling up at the gas station right by the waterpark as you enter lava. This local Razor riding legend (found this out later) was chatting us up and told us of a trail that left right from the gas station. It was awesome, we rode it all day. It was mostly ATV track, but lots of fun and there was a spur off it that was a gnarly ascent through the woods to a peak. You need to go through a farmer's pasture with a gate but it leaves right from that gas station.

Hit me up via PM if you want more beta when you're heading up there. But yeah, great riding and those hot springs are even better after a day on the bikes, especially the cold plunge pool.

I'll stop cunting up my own thread now

Not sure if I like the treatment on this or not. Probably post something different later if I can find some time.
