Alternative/Indie music thread
My hope in creating this thread is to share some of my music, and get some cool recommendations from others. I pretty much live in a cave so I have NO idea what is popular. I'm betting of this stuff is super popular, but I think some of it will be new. I don't claim to have good taste in music - I just like what I like. I realize there's a certain amount of arrogance involved with starting a thread assuming I have the ability to recommend music to other people, but I really don't want to make this about me. I just want to make a thread where we can share this type of music without a bunch of individual threads.
I'll get it started with some of my favorites, which I'm sure most of you have heard, but maybe it'll spark some recommendations.
Modest Mouse Too hard to choose one song from such a prolific band, but this is the only song a friend and I both knew all the lyrics to on a sea kayaking trip. We ended up singing it over and over again.
The National They have a number of good songs, but this one is my favourite.
Lisa Hannigan Saw her in September. She is utterly fantastic live. Played like 8 instruments and her voice is incredible.
The Jezabels Also amazing live. Pumped for their show in Seattle this Thursday.
I'll post some other stuff soon, but please feel free to contribute your suggestions. New, old; known, unknown - I don't care as long as it's good.

Hey thanks you two! JayP, never heard of The Sound, and that was pretty decent. Cheers.
I'm actually not a huge fan of instrumentals (though Jacno was pretty decent). Besides classical music, I think the only instrumental I really enjoy is:
Explosions in the Sky For some reason, this is fantastic to listen to while skiing.
And while we're on the subject of skiing - let's talk about mountains:
Great Northern Mountain
The Heartless Bastards The Mountain
As always, recommend me some good music!"Alpine rock and steep, deep powder are what I seek, and I will always find solace there." - Bean Bowers

Been listening to the first two songs here on repeat for the last few days (with other stuff too, obviously).
The Rural Alberta Advantage In the Summertime. For some reason I couldn't find the album version, but this one is pretty decent. Really love the line: "It's not the words, it's the ones you stress." I like this song best, but they're quickly becoming one of my new favourite bands.
Perfume Genius Dark Parts.
Hurts To Purr Matinee. Older song, but I really love it.

Bumping this thread after a while.
Cross posting cuz I found a song I really like by iscariot by a band I'd forgotten about.
Also wanted to add some of The New Pornographers
I KNOW there are others with similar tastes in music. Would love to get introduced to some new stuff, or maybe just rediscover something I'd forgotten about. This way I don't have to hog other threads with my own tastes. And everybody else: feel free to be self-indulgent in this thread!"Alpine rock and steep, deep powder are what I seek, and I will always find solace there." - Bean Bowers

Moved this post from the Powerful music thread.
Have to add this one too, cuz it reminds me so much of my brother that I almost feel like it's something that has to be played at his funeral:
