    I'd say.......lemme see........about 86 seconds between when I saw that announced last week and my order for a hero hd2 was placed.....

    I think that's about right.

    This is an awesome announcement. I wonder whether the 35Mbps data rate will work in 30p mode too.

    Can you explain in dummy language what this means? Crisper slow mo?

    I am pulling the trigger on this this week. Can't wait for the wifi remote viewer. That is what I need.

    The long and short of it is the footage will work better for pros and look worse for newbs. Reason is, newbs don't color grade footage or do other post processing like selective sharpening. By doing this upgrade they are turning off sharpening, noise reduction and providing a flat image. This is great for everyone in the know that is already shooting a flat profile like cinestyle because it gives you more dynamic range. Being able to use the same LUT for this as you do for cinestyle is nice for those who know what they are doing. But what some don't get is to make it look good you HAVE TO WORK ON IT IN POST.

    I for one think this is awesome. But I bet you will hear a bunch of hacks claiming their new footage looks like shit. Even though technically it will smoke the footage shot with the old firmware after you work on it in post.

    I keep going back to this video, but if you don't understand dynamic range and what is happening when you shoot in a cinestyle like flat profile, check this. This is what you will need to do from now on at the bare minimum to get good footage from a GoPro. The first 2 minutes don't really matter but watch them anyway to understand what is happening.

    The color / whitebalance on the Gopro f'n suuuuucks...on the original HD one anyway. Anything to improve this is a good thing. Unfortunately it looks like this is for the Hero 2. Anyone know if it will work on the 1st version?

    He's showing you, that even if you like the look of the Canon standard profile, you can adjust the flatter image to look like that with better detail in the highs and lows. What this also means is it gives you many more options when it comes time to color correct and grade. You have much more latitude to work with. You will be able to achieve things you absolutely couldn't get from the standard profile because you don't have enough information.

    You should see what a straight film telecine looks like before anything is done to it. Shooting flat and getting as much dynamic range as possible is an attempt to get closer to the dynamic range of film.

    Just bought an HD Hero 2 last week. Once firmware is updgraded, how much of a video guy do I need to be to take advantage of the color profile and also not lose out on quality because of it.

    Can I do it in iMovie or do I need to finally learn Premiere or Final Cut?

    Had so much fun with the gopro this past weekend but it really struggles in changing light. I'm thinking for trail riding in the woods, a cloudy day is going to be the best.

    EDIT: I will now punch myself b/c within 4 days of getting the gopro I have gone and posted unedited footage that is probably boring to everyone else but me, something I have hated on for years. I've become one of them. Fuck

    Ok, I get it. I assume this is an optional mode that has to be activated.

    Next question. My imac is out, since it is dual core intel with 2 gb ram.
    My work laptop has an Intel i5 2520 processor with 6 gb ram. Will that work, or will it be too slow?

    I don`t plan on making cinematic masterpieces, but I would like to learn, and I don`t have the patience to deal with super slow editing.

    weird. so you don't actually get flat files, you have to color correct them in the cineform app?

    Depending on if the footage actually does give you greater dynamic range I would have to see for myself.

    All the pdf says, is now you transcode the h.264 in their software, color correct it and bring it into your NLE. Then you can edit the new bigger transcoded file it created. Which is BASICALLY the same way "knowing" people did it before except completely backwards. Color grading an edit should be the absolute last thing you do. It's not like a still picture where you process the color and boom your done. When color correcting an edit for video the colors from clip to clip edit should look seamless. The positive side of this is you can keep this open after your edit and tweak all the files and they should relink in your NLE, but then you have to keep switching back and forth between 2 programs. Very clunky implementation.

    Again, a lot of times when you look at outtakes from films you can see the colors are flat and dark and look nothing like the final edit. It's because they edit before they color correct. If they color corrected all the raw from the getgo they would be throwing away days upon days of work on the cutting room floor. Sure I guess you could use their software to just transcode, then edit in your nle and then color correct. But then you still run into having to do your color work in one app and see how it works with the clip next to it in the other app. Then go back, make tweaks and so on.

    Unless I am reading this incorrectly I don't see it being the next best thing to sliced bread.

    I still don't have one. My 'connection' for getting one didn't come through. Imma gonna borrow a buddy's and fuck around with it. The 24fps was as much reason as the color for me getting all excited. But I'll try to find out what I can.

    this is now out, I haven't checked it out yet but i plan on it soon. Pretty sick of the yellow cast on all the footage coming from my hero2 and I think this will fix it.

    Yeah, I'm guessing they were pushing to get it ready for that rather than to get it into the hands of Hero2 owners.
