Thread: Recommend me a 2.2 or 2.25 tire

I like wider tires because I kinda suck.

I have a 2.4 Purgatory on the front, which is kinda awesome. The 2.25 NoNi on the rear is wearing fast, and just about every side knob is broken.
The thing is, the weight has spoiled me. What's a good replacement on the rear? (not running tubeless, btw)
I don't think I want drifty. I think I want big side knobs. well under 700g?
Was thinking Ardents, Captains, Wild Racers, Advantages, something along those lines. Anything good from Bonti?
Mostly hardpack and loose over hard pack.
I weigh a little over 180.

tires I hated: Ignitors. Not particularly fast or grippy. By the time I found a pressure where I'd get some of both, I'd pinch flat.

Look at the 2.2 purgatory grid. I use it as a rear and it works great. Not drifty

Continental Trail King or Mt King. Black Chili with protection and it makes a bombproof tire.

I'm not great either, but I'm trying to up my comfort level when things get drifty. That said, the Ardent 2.25 might be a decent choice. I'd never ride it up front, but its been predictable in the rear when mated with something like a Minion.

Love the 2.4 Ardent for the rear.

Love my 2.4 Ardent in front. Just ordered a 2.25 Ardent to replace my 2.4 Fat Albert rear (which wasn't bad).

I'm running ardents on the rear for all my bikes right now. Fast, respectably light, works on everything.

Also had good luck with the ADvantage as a rear tire; doesn't do so hot when its wet, but the tread lasts forever, its got hudge volume, and it corners well.

I liked the NoNic for about three rides. Then it literally started falling apart. Too bad.

I'll send you a 2.4 advantage and a 2.3 captain and a 2.35 nevegal and maybe some other stuff for $60.

^^^This. Am running the UST 2.1 version, on two bikes. It's pretty damn big for a 2.1 tire. Love it. Wish they made the 2.25 in a UST, though at least they do a UST 2.25 Ardent - got one of those waiting to try once one of the ADvantages dies.

Minion 2.35 up front on one bike, and a Butcher 2.3 on the other - great combos both, though am digging the Butcher *eversoslightly* more.

i like my 2.25 crossmark lust. rolls fast. the lust is good with a lil less air for braking and still has some integrity for cornering.

Captain has shitty braking and steep climbing traction

Michelin Wild Rock'r 2.25

I'm running them front and rear now, and they work really well for the steep, loose, rocky riding I do. They hook up well with firm, sharp, well spaced knobs- both braking and cornering. The climbing ability over steps and loose dirt is far superior to the 2.4 Ardent I ran previously. The casing on the Michelins is thick, and a bit heavier than the Schwobble, but this is the first "trail" tire I've been able to ride like a DH tire. Square edge rocks? No problem. Tight grippy berms? No problem. The casing takes the hits and stays put when loaded up in a corner.

As a guy who has a closet full of half-used MTB tires, I can't say enough good about these. They roll pretty well for how knobby they are (faster than the Minions, slower than the Ardents), but I wish they had a little more air volume. I run them tubeless on Spank Spike (35mm wide) rims, and they measure close to 2.3. I suspect on an average rim they would be right at 2.25.

Hopefully we'll see a 2.4 version at some point.

Xtra, I've read that, but is it an issue when it's dry all the time? Is that your personal experience?
What's the word on the new Mountain Kings?

grinch, I was considering the crossmark, but it really doesn't have much for side knobs. Does look like a fast tire, though.

How much and how used is the 2.4 advantage for a Boulder area (Lyons) pickup?

Aren't most of these recommendations quite a bit over the <700 gram level? I know Maxxis never made a light Minion (I'd have bought it).
For lighter weight/big volume, I'd stick with the Schwalbes or Purgs. Another option for hardpack is the Mutano Raptor in 2.4.
Sub 700 gram, slightly tougher than Schwalbes, and work well in anything but slop.

Mountain king, ardent, and captain all come in versions that are less than 700g. Some by a lot.

Anyone try the Bonti XR3 team issue? It's stupid light in "team issue" and it's $40 at the LBS.

I'm rockin a WTB Mutano 2.4 up front and I love it, corners very well in loose stuff. My Kenda rear has worn quick, so I'm probably going to put on a Schwalbe nobby-nic. I like the way the Schwalbe nobby-nic corners on the wifes bike and it climbs great, for what it's worth.

I got a bunch of buddies on Psycho Geniuses. Seem like avereage weight. Not as knobby as a no-nic or a nevegal though.

I like both purgatory and the ADvantage as a rear tire.

also, just started riding a WTB bronson in the rear and i am very impressed.

Might try an ardent this summer as well.

If you like a knobby tire with really good climbing and breaking traction then have a look at the GEAX Gato in a 2.3 width. Good volume. Good thing also is the knobs aren't breaking off as they do on the Schwalbe pendants plus they roll a LOT better. They come in a lighter and a heavy duty version but even in latter they don't weight more than 700 g each.

Can't recommend them enough.

Anyone have any time on the Mountain King II?

The 2.2 is pretty pinner and the 2.4 is supposed to be pretty high volume. Would love something right in between.
