Captain braking traction was atrocious, slightly better than say a high roller semi slick (but didn't corner as well.)

Climbing traction was marginal on hardpack, terrible on loose / loose over hard. Never rode it back east / mT. only in ColoRADo.

the MKII 2.4 is tall, and has a decent bit of air volume, but the tread is way narrow. actual measured 2.2 width. the casing width is about 2.25. i am putting a set on next week to try, fwiw.

    Thanks. Good to know.

The speed of the NoNi has really spoiled me. I know they've changed over the passed few years. Is the wear any better? If so, I'll wait till they show up on Chainlove like last time.

So I've still got time to decide, but the center tread on the NoNi seems to be wearing at an ever increasing rate.

Can anyone compair the Ardent 2.25 to the purg 2.2 as a rear tire? They honestly seem a little aggressive for around here, but I'm starting to ride rocky, loose downhill sections faster and better. If they roll fast, then good.

And I still don't wanna count out the new Mtn Kings.

    Decisions decisions.

I third or fourth the Advantage as a rear tire. I run the 2.4 Ardent up front and the 2.25 Advantage out back on my Nomad. I was running a High Roller on the rear before and like the Advantage more, plus noticed the decreased rolling resistance first ride out.

Seems on the heavy side, but I wonder if I'd notice anyway.
I mean, I really wonder if I'd notice the difference between several tires of similar weight and knobs.

I'm not diggin it so much compared to the original MK. In a totally nontechnical sense, the rubber just feels less supple and not as stable cornering. For that reason it might wear better, though.

The 2.4 is definitely a true 2.4, maybe even a little bigger. It feels big for a trail bike. The old MK 2.4 measures more like 2.3 which feels right for all mountain riding for me. Paired with a wide enough rim, I haven't had any flats or volume issues. I will continue buying original MK's.

Edit - haven't tried it as a rear - but the 2.4 is pretty huge for a rear tire - it won't fit my frame.

I have a couple of MKs (old style) in 2.4; one standard folding and one Supersonic. I'm so-so on them.
Because of the thin pliable sidewalls and tall soft lugs they have a very narrow sweet spot regarding pressure; too high and it gets squirmy on the lugs (feels like they are folding over when leaned on in turns), too low and the entire casing feels squirmy in turns. The lugs are also too long and soft for hard pack, again, they seem to fold over when pushed.
They do work well for XC on soft wet trails where the lugs can get some dig. The supersonic is a good xc wet raceday tire.

the mk2 with protection sidewall is a much stiffer casing, and the knobs on the mk2 are broader and more supportive than the old MK, just FWIW.

    my new MK2 2.4 protection measures a true 2.2" @ knobs, 2.25" @ casing, on a 23mm internal rim

Sounds like they turned it into a Nobby Nic.
    Not a bad thing.

All good stuff here. I'll add my data points.

Love the 2.25 Ardent that came OEM with my bike last year. Bomber, climbed well and rolled just as well. It wore faster than I anticipated, but whatever, that's probably more user error than anything. And since I'm in Bozeman, things are a little drier and rockier over here, so I suspect you'll like it.

I've been running a 2.4 Advantage for a while; both front and back. It was ok out back, but it's rad up front. Like you, I prefer a skinnier tire out back for less rolling resistance.

There you have it. Go ride and report back.

bump cause it won't stop raining and I'm bored.
NN is starting to show cuts in the sidewall.
would love if anyone can chime in on the newer version of the NN as far as durability.
more importantly, would love if anyone could chime in on Purg 2.2 v Ardent 2.25.

Maybe it'll be dry again soon.

    2012 Bonty XR4 Team Issue TLR's
i just ordered a pair of 2.2's for my asr5c.
prolly won't mount them until mid-week.
    reviews have been positive.
they run big, there is also a 2.35 version.
looking forward to new rubber, the bike came with Rocket Ron's.
which are retard lite, but set up tubeless, they suck.

not sure if you mentioned whether you'll be running 'em tubeless...FWIW exo and the older non-exo versions of the ardent 2.25s and 2.4s work well in terms of combining lowish rolling resistance and decent grip, and mount up ghetto or stan's rim tubeless, but the advantages (at least all the ones I own) are an older bead/sidewall design and kind of a pain to run tubeless IME. however the Advantage center blocks make it work pretty well as a rear tire.

i'm a fan of the purgatory tires at least for Tahoe conditions. i think all mine are 2.4s though. quite large for the nominal size; a 2.2 rear would prolly work well, and specialized tires mount up tubeless so damn well with a floor pump. find myself buying more specialized tires and less maxxis tires these days.

I've got a pair of 2011 NN on my trail bike, the tubeless ready 2.35 version. I've been really happy with them rode them since June last year and through the shitty winter we had in Flagstaff, so they've had some miles. I have stans in there, and minimal signs of wear.

Not sure if this is a different vintage than you have, but mine have been flawless

I have the 2.4 purg on the front and I like it.
Some people would consider a 2.2 purg or a 2.25 ardent overkill for the rear around here, but as I said, I suck. Wish I could try them back to back as their performance in the normally dry conditions around here seems comparable.
Gheto tubeless is always a possibility.
I should add that these would be mounted on 317 rims, so narrow.

Rear tire? Specialized ground control (not sure if its been said yet).
Fairly light. Rolls incredibly well. Much better rear grip than the captain.
Lighter and faster than an ardent.

    Control casing. Tubeless Bliss.

Don't know -- I've never tried the Advantage, but I generally like higher-volume tires, and the positive comments in this thread (and the cheap price) made me order two. I'll try them out and see.
