    Yet another poor oppressed teacher!

    When will the madness end?!?!?!

MEA member says reform bill calling for teachers to contribute minimally to retirement is unfair

By Tom Gantert, published on April 18, 2012

Terri List says she would tell her students not to become a teacher in Michigan.

    Why?

One of the reasons is because the Saginaw Township Community School District English teacher won’t be able to retire at age 47 as she has hoped.

List was highlighted by the Michigan Education Association as one of the critics of Senate Bill 1040, which would require public school employees to contribute at least 5 percent of their compensation to their retirement plan.

The MEA reported on its website: "Saginaw Township teacher Terry (sic) List had hoped to retire in the next three years when she was 47 years old. That wouldn’t be possible under SB 1040. List would have to work another 16 years to be eligible for health benefits."

“By the time I’m 60, I would have put in 43 years of service, earning a salary at the top of the pay scale. How does that save the district money? You could hire two people for the cost of one and encourage young people to join the profession. Right now, I would not recommend to my pupils to become a teacher in Michigan.”

List didn’t respond to an email seeking comment.

According to the school’s most recent teacher’s contract, List earns between $70,000 and $80,000 a year depending upon her level of education. Factor in expected pay raises over the next 15 years and it’s likely List would make more than $90,000 by the time she retires, said Michael Van Beek, education policy director at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

Van Beek estimated List’s pension would be $60,000 a year in retirement and it would increase 3 percent a year and she would get health benefits when she retired at age 60. Van Beek also said that it is likely that List bought “years of service” because she said she would have 43 years of service by age 60. Van Beek said that practice is basically extinct in the private sector.

Leon Drolet, chairman of the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance, called List’s comments “amazing.”

“Wow. They have reached the politicians’ level of entitlement,” Drolet said. “She thinks she is entitled to retire at 47? Holy smokes. I don’t know what more to say to that. A government employee thinking that 47 is a reasonable expectation to retire shows just how deep inside their own bubble they live, insulated from the real world.”

Charles Owens, president of the Michigan chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business, said tongue-in-cheek that List was “spot on” in her complaint.

“If you want to retire if you are 47, apparently teaching is not the place to go,” Owens said. “The least Terri could do is provide a list of places other people could go so they can retire when they are 47.”

Not that way in CO. The state started contributing less money to our pensions and we've had a pay freeze for the last 4 years. No teacher I know expects to retire at 47. Just a dumb bitch who said something stupid and made the media cum in their pants for the story to stir people up.

OMG!!! Teh horrors!!!! Boy - I really hope the state doesn't start cotributing less to my pension!!!! That'd be horrible!!!Bueno - come to Wisconsistan. There are thousands of "dumb bitch" teachers here who scream endlessly at the top of their lungs about how they are being forced off the gravey train. They live in such a fantasy bubble that they actually think if they just get the story of their "plight" out to enough people then regular citizens will be behind them 100%. Funny thing is, the more they cry and scream and shit their diapers, the more the average Joe hates them.If they would have just kept their pie-holes shut for the past year they might have had a sliver of a chance of winning the recall.

Bun - sorry bro, unless it's the Hex hatch I don't go stumbling around in rivers two hours after. Plus we got about 4" of snow last night. To your credit - at least you tried a new angle on the old "Do you even ski???" chestnut.

well the state is our employer. most employers contribute to your retirement...they dont' even match my contribution like many employers would. i'm sick of everyone saying 'oh if it's so bad why don't you go get a job in the "real world"'. i had a job in the "real world" and could make much more money if i chose to go to the private sector but i'm good at what i do, i love it, and i believe the education system is terrible right now and i'm trying to make a difference.

the union sucks. i wish enough teachers would get on board w/ this idea and we could actually make a change. the union seems more like an independent entity unconcerned with teachers needs or what is best for the education system. they just want to see how far they can push the limits til it all comes crashing down.

dbt - what do you do? have you ever taught? how do you know we "have it made?" and we actually took a 5% pay cut because we had to make up the portion of our retirement that the state quit contributing.

What I "Make" has health insurance taken out of it. It's not in addition to it.

There is NO retirement for them to cut 5% from. So my 401k saving comes out of my pay. It's not in addition to my pay.

I make $50 a day plus what I earn. I don't start the year knowing I'm guarranteed anything. I wake up every day with the posibility of making $50.

When I a vacation, my vacation pay is $50 a day.

I'm a person who gets paid to produce a result. I get nothing for free. I'm not complaining. Just sayin'.

Nice. You basically ignored your teachers, dropped out of school, and became a vacuum salesman. Now you're pissed at the teachers who couldn't cram a thought down your throat. Keep fighting the good fight man. You obviously aren't complaining, just trying to start a short-bus revolution.

A lot of sales people make minimum wage and KILL it on commissions.

I highly doubt DBT kills it, but I am sure he earns much more than his base pay.

More than likely they say that because you're constantly bitching about your job. My advise is to stop bitching. Everybody has something about their job they don't like - they're just not constantly whining about it. If you think your retirement plan sucks you should get a load of my retirement plan. It's called death. Retirement is for weaklings.

Did you read my post? I love my job. The only thing I'm bitching about is that people who have never taught a day in their lives are complaining about teachers being spoiled and overpaid.

Understood.. But WTF? If he gets 3 weeks vacation and takes it that's $750 for the year. 10 sick days, that's $500. 10 vacation, $500. All told that's 7 out of 52 weeks he only makes $250.

To be fair that was a long time ago before Downbound Train retired. Back then Snickers only cost a nickel so $50 a day went a lot further.

In my world a sick day is a day that you feel like shit, but still work.

In most of the maggots worlds a sick day is a day that you lie about feeling like shit so you can ride powder. LOL

You're right she deserves a medal, not 60K a year for her pension.

    Stupid asshole.

Why is the Michigan Tax Payers Alliance a joke?

Why does someone deserve anything extra for teaching for 20 years vs doing some other job for 20 years? Do you really think that getting overpaid for a job that is easier than most isn't enough?

I was roomates in college with a guy who majored in elementary ed. Not once did I ever hear him or his friends talk about how motivated they were to "educate".

ALL they talked about was the cushy schedule the perks and the nice pension. And of course they bitched that the entry level pay was too low.

I content that the teaching profession is populated to a VERY large degree by slackers. And very little by people with a burning desire to teach kids.

    Pretty funny.

SHe works for 20+ years, makes her 401K, decides to retire, gets shit from it from out of work losers here on TGR, but any other gov employee does not get the same critique?

You guys should have paid attention more in your public school education, you would not be such absolute retards.
