A single bump could be possible if there are empty seats at some point, but it would probably be expensive since you would likely need a pickup out of the zone also. A ski plane would be cheaper for a single hop..

I can float back down the river. And the spot I'm thinking a plane couldn't land. Peak 5650 next to Mt Palmer. It's only like a 5-10 minute flight for you.

[QUOTE][TGR is here at our heli operation filming the Dream Factory in an area we call the Anchorage Chugach Zone/QUOTE]
saw your heli in Cordova. Wondered where you carpetbaggers ended up. Just got back from a week of skiing over that way. I am very happy that your sorry asses did not drop in on us.

All the heli operations are carpetbaggers. To my knowledge not one is owned or operated by Alaskans, and a very small percentage of guides and employees are local. I'd like to see that change.

I really do not care who owns the operation. I resent the fact that they are flying in this area. They are taking advantage of the lack of regulations in the Mat Su Borough. They are saying they will fly pretty much everything from the Colony to the Nelchina. I have been touring that area for 30 years. I have never run into another group on a trip in this area. local Alaskan use this area because there is no heli's in the area and offers road access to long trips. It is nice to know where the heli's are so people who choose to can avoid them.

Both operators in Haines are owned by year round Alaskans. And while I can't speak for the other guides, there is a lot more I can do in the lower 48 to improve my guiding skills than hanging around in the dark up here.

    P.S. Good luck Gunder!

That puts Haines at the top of my list. I buy local if at all possible. Be realistic though there's nothing you can do in the lower 48 that can't be done in Alaska, mountainwise. Short days make you stronger, faster at least, because you have less time to do whatever it is you're doing.

Yes, but you tend to get lazy in the summer, well because, you can just take your sweet time.

So Gunder, WAS actually training for AK! Sweet...

We get endurance during the summer, it stays light so we keep going all night!

There is a lot I've accomplished down south that I would not have done if I'd only been hanging out in the Chilkats and Takhinshas near Haines all year. For instance, I've been working on an advanced snow science degree and using state of the art GIS technology at my other job, both of which have made me a much more well rounded guide, than say some extra time spent skinning in AK.

More to the point though, congrats, Gunder. And Wissman says, "Good luck" from Haines.

...Angel came in second this year, was tied with Crystal at the last comp of the year, was ahead by .03 points after run one, and then Crystal laid down the goods and won the run/comp/season. Angel took first the last two years...

Great crew is right, have fun Gunder!!

We're certainly not a blues band in any kind of purest sense, but to me Rock and Roll has always had it's roots in that tradition.

Knik River Lodge? Yep...I think that's where the ADFG put us up a few nights on a study. At least I think that was the lodge....a bunch of wall tents and some cabins. Great food if I remember right. When you're in Palmer...you GOTTA go to the Valley Hotel...that's where the locals go...best diner food in town...and a fairly interesting 'frontier-style' bar. Valley Hotel diner has great pies!!!! Not pizza pies, though.

    Have a blast!

Eh?? Never heard of the Geophysical Institute on the UAF campus in Fairbanks? They're got some of the best snow/ice/permafrost research and graduate education programs in the world. They are highly respected for the breadth of their study and excellent laboratories.

Here's a link to their snow program:

In true Gunder fashion, he won't even post again for a few months.
I miss the days when he and BakerBoy fought on the internet on the one computer they shared.
We don't make the snow. We just make it more enjoyable.

UAF focuses more on glacier and permafrost research rather than avalanches. Additionally, I'm not really into -50F temps and meager snow with 3hrs of light in Dec. Enough thread jacking. Was just trying to defend against some potshots earlier.
