    Coffee makers: Bonavita vs. Technivorm

So my coffee maker died yesterday. Last time I was shopping around the only 'good' consumer maker was a Technivorm, but I'm too cheap to pay $300 for a coffee maker. Doing some research I saw that Bonavita is making a nice unit that it a little more affordable ($150)
Clive Coffee has a nice write comparing them both over here:
    http://www.clivecoffee.com/learn/201...orm/#more-1168
but I was wondering if anyone has played with both units?

I bought the Tecniworm a couple years back and returned it.

A more economical choice for me, which I have been happy with are the coffee makers from
    Capresso

    MG600 (glass carafe)
    MT500 (stainless carafe)

What didn't you like about the vorm?
The capresso units are in the same ballpark price wise as the Bonavitas.

They tout delivering hottest water to the grounds, but the coffee I made with it was not very tasty. I was disappointed with the water distribution to the grounds as well, as I thought that might have been part of the problem, and ended up returning it without doing anything further.

Don't know if it's made any more, if not, maybe you can find a good deal .... +1 for the Capresso. We have the Capresso 454 coffee team-s. Have had it for a few years now and it is hands down the best coffee grinder/maker we have owned. Not 1 problem, set the timer, grinds and brews. My wife lives on coffee so it gets a lot of use.... Good luck.

Bunn coffeemakers deliver the water at the same temp for $150 less. Makes a pot in less than 3 minutes. Great coffeemaker!

My Bunn just died after 1.5 years, was pretty happy with it until then.

we are rocking a Capresso 453 for over 5y now and couldn't be happier. Burr grinder, timer, etc. wakes us up in the am and delivers consistently great coffee. The grinder seems to be on its last legs, as it smells like the motor might be going out, but when it does, we'll probably get another Capresso.

Serious question: So are you guys getting these coffee makers for the convenience (grinds and brews on its own before you wake up kind of thing) or because they actually make better coffee?

The reason I ask is because I get fantastic results with a hand burr grinder and a siphon brewer then anything else I've tried. The drawback is you have to put a lot of time and effort into each cup of coffee and you only get one each time, not to mention cleaning the thing. However, I drink coffee the way I drink an expensive scotch. I sit and savor it rather than throw it in a mug and rush off to work. The attention I give to the brewing of one cup is a part of the whole experience.

This seems to sum it up?:

The Bonavita is a 1400watt unit that is supposed to perform like the Technivorm, or better due to the spray heads, and make a damn good cup of coffee. Or so they say.

Yep, thanks for that. I think I'll be sticking to the siphon/press pot. Though I have to say that them using Starbucks as a benchmark for good coffee is a joke.

Ha, I was thinking that myself.

Clever coffee - all the benefits of a French Press - without the mud in the bottom of the cup and a much easier clean up. Haven't found a better cup of coffee. Also allows you to grind the beans finer because you use a filter. Finer beans = more flavor. Boil water then pour slowly from 10-12" and the water will be about 205 degrees when it hits the grounds.

This is why I use a siphon. Cloth filter = espresso grind and the very nature of the brewer makes the water temp perfect. I have yet to find a better way, but learning how to use them properly takes time and a lot of practice.

Have no fear. Tech Talk is one of the greatest forums on the planet. It will keep its identity intact.

    As Shelley wrote:

Only he was talking of summertime and we all saw plants through the last winter, which made us all lament. Better to drink really fine coffee now than lament our lost season any further.

Nothing to add either. I don't even drink
Coffee but man this is just another chilling reminder of the season that never was
Do I detect a lot of anger flowing around this place? Kind of like a pubescent volatility, some angst, a lot of I'm-sixteen-and-angry-at-my-father syndrome?

Got the Bonavita yesterday, makes pretty good coffee - definitely a step up from the Bunn. Guess the
water temp does make a difference.
