    MPC #82 - long exposure: urban edition - March 25-April 9th

For the purposes of this MPC, a long exposure will be defined as >1 second. I also want to see photos within city (town) limits. If your town has a glorious park I'm really happy for you. But, these photos should be characterized by a recognizable town/city/urban vibe.

Not everything has to have tell-tale signs of a long exposure (light trails, soft water, etc). Many subjects one could photograph might necessitate a long exposure because of available light. However, available light should play a significant role in order to justify the slow shutter. That is to say, I probably won't consider too many shots of things that could easily be photographed handheld but an ND was used to make it a long exposure.

I know "bulb" has been a theme before. But, as many of you know, now that we are around to MPC #82, brand-spankin' new themes aren't super easy to come up with. I even tried to steal ideas from Fred Miranda's weekly/monthly assignments, but even they revisit themes relatively often.

I'm excited to see what you all come up with. We'll close it at 12:00am April 10th (midnight PST, April 9th).

    RULES:
    1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.
    2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.
    3. The contest moderator will choose 5 photos to be voted on.
    4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way, not an option.)
    5. In the event of a tie, the contest moderator will have the deciding vote.
    6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.
    7. The winner has 3 days to start a new contest or 2nd place becomes the new winner.

These two were shot last night, 3/24, but are both ~30 sec exposures. Not sure about the urbanity of them, but hope you guys will let me slide.

go ahead and leave them in and if you find something else you would like to shoot within the time frame you can replace either or both later. The goal is to get out with a theme in mind rather than find shots you already have that happen to fit the theme. But they are cool photos and it's always a bummer when you shoot something that would fit an MPC and miss the timeframe by a day.

Does an animated .gif count if the total of the exposure times adds up to more than 1 second?

I kid, I kid. Sort of.

I have a couple ideas, hopefully will have time to get out and shoot them.

Boo!! Don't box in folks creativity what that statement!! In fact, I think I want to see what I can do during the day, just because you said that!! See what people come up with and let the chip fall where they may. I'm not mad or anything, just saying that you shouldn't "automatically exclude" something until you see the results.

I see outabounds crushing this one.

Not taken during the time frame, but it's relevant. That's cool, right? If not let me know and I'll take it down.

This is a good idea. I'll do my best to get something up.

I definitely don't want to stifle creativity. Admittedly I was unsure what wording to use. Ultimately long exposure is the theme. The photo should benefit from the long exposure. When I used that example I was thinking that a static subject, shot in light that would easily be successful handheld or with a more typical shutter speed might not being the strongest realization of the topic. I definitely don't want or intend to limit people to time of day. Using an ND during the day time to create an image with the spirit of the topic is absolutely welcomed.

I thought it was pretty cool.... But I blow at long exposure stuff...

Not really urban, but the mountains are being lit by the town/ski hill.

They built this Ice structure in Silverthorne, CO just about 30 minutes from where I live. I actually went on the 2nd to last day and a lot had melted. Google Silverthorne ice castles or search on Flickr for more shots of it at its height.

They built a bunch of PVC pipes and dripped water out and farmed icicles that they attached and buried lights in the ice. That's the short story.

Those three bright spots are the Moon, Venus, and...? I read somewhere about them being real close together right now. Sweet shot for sure.

Funny, I saw this topic and immediately thought of that exact same location... might get out there tonight, but will try for something a little different if I do.

I think the navy yard docks have some potential too. Looking forward to exploring around this area in the summer. I almost wonder with an ND if star trails would be possible there.

I have a plan, but I think it's going to take me the entire time to get it dialed in...

Edit: This photo is getting more and more expensive (and this is without the bunch of new ND's I may or may not have to purchase to make this work like I want it to), but I'm having loads of fun trying to work this problem out!

I'm in the same boat Lonnie - think I'm going to have to at least buy an ND or two...

I think by timing my shot(s) correctly, I'm going to be able to get away without buying one. Dawn and Dusk, FTW.

So far I think the few test shots I've taken look really cool, but I still have some technical (camera) issues to work out (it could be as simple as a bungee cord or I could have to rework my entire setup.) (This would also be WAY easier if I had a helper, but I kinda like the challenge of doing this totally by myself.) I also have some processing issues to work on and modification and honing of some pre-existing processing techniques. And I have yet to find the right "urban" location that isn't too far from my house and isn't crowded at "primetime". However this shakes out, I'll have put more time and effort into this MPC than any other to date...
