MPC # 81- VOTING - Old School - Ends 3/24
MPC #81 - Old School
Poll ends March 25, 2012
EDIT: I intended the poll to end 3/24 but put the wrong number in for days when setting up the poll. Now I can't figure out how to change the poll or the title of this thread, so guess it's going 'til the 25th unless someone can tell me how to change it.
Here, after much scratching of my head and changing my mind back and forth are the five finalists. Congrats, good luck, and thanks for playing!

I thought this was a good theme for an MPC, Willie. I'm surprised there weren't more entries.

Thanks. I figured there could be a lot of different interpretations and takes on this one and am also surprised at the lack of entries. Oh well, still some quality stuff that made picking my five favorites not-so-easy.

Dude, I thought it was a great topic. I didn't actually get to shoot what I wanted to. I wanted to shoot my buddy's 84 f150 moving, from the bed, with a UWA and slow shutter.
But, you know, baby. Goin' over and drinkin' and ridin' around in the back of the buddy's pick up isn't really considered a viable reason for a hall pass. For some reason, it just seemed hard to get out and shoot. Even the POTD hasn't been blowing up as usual.
What is usual, some great entries. I appreciate the nod.
Obviously the AD nailed the theme.
That car, that house, that color are phenomenal.
Shralph always kills it. And come on, this is a ski site.
Dude. That chair looks fun to ride!

I don't always plan out MPC shots. I do find my most successful photos, in general (MPC or otherwise) tend to have some sort of pre-visualization involved. For an MPC, I'll often think about the theme and what I have/know/can do to communicate the theme. If I just wait around to get lucky with photos, then I usually do a lot of waiting around. As a new dad, I have a small window of serendipitous shooting.
Also, what I like about these MPC's is the way a good theme can push your creativity and typical repertoire. For me, to use that opportunity best means thinking about what the MPC wants to convey and how to do it. It means thinking about the story the photo is trying to tell and what is the best/most beautiful/striking way to tell that story.

Good summary. Similar to my thinking. I was down in Zion over the course of this MPC, and knew of this place, but with a 10 month old in tow, I couldn't really make it there and everywhere else we wanted to got given his eating/sleep schedules (he's not been easy on us so far). No worries tho....
Good luck to everyone one in this one! This is the worst pain EVER!

I'm with splitter on the planning vs. serendipity thing. I mean, look what I did to win the last one - really out of character for me but I wanted to push myself a little and I wanted to approach the theme from a different angle than what I thought most other people would. That subject captured my imagination so I put a fair amount of thought into how to portray it *AND* I had plenty of free time during that contest. Other times it's a lot more serendipitous and I also get that people are busy and sometimes don't have the luxury to participate. I will say that one of the things I enjoy most about these MPCs is that I often go out and shoot things specifically for them - it gives me motivation to try shooting subjects and/or using techniques I might not normally think about.
