Ever heard of a Republican with an environmental conscience?

Sounds about as ridiculous as a fish that walks on land, right?

Turns out they BOTH exist. I know, I know.....amazing!

Here's the fish that walks on land...the Mudskipper:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudskipper

And here is the MUCH more rare species of Environmentalist Republicans:
    http://www.repamerica.org/

So here is my question to you Republitards: Are these seemingly smart, environmentally-aware republicans TRAITORS to the cause of Consevatarded Republitards everywhere?

Is it even possible that they can exist at all? One would think that in light of all pressure that their fellow republicans must give them to be as habitually STUPID as themselves, that these environmentally-conscious Republicans would simply self-combust like magnesium in a bell jar of oxygen.

What say ye about this, Republitards?

    Teddy Roosevelt and Richard Nixon.

I think the anti-science movement on the right is relatively new...certainly mostly Reagan and after.

You know the DBTs and Rubi's on here will chime in blaming dems for politicizing being good to the environment.

Calling a troll a troll is not the same as typing out an ultra long-winded response featuring links and graphs to prove how wrong you are.

See - this is one of the reasons why you suck so bad.

The only difference between a Dem enviro and a Repub enviro is the level of hypocracy.

Ah....so you admit it then....environmentally-aware Republicans are about as rare as intelligent Republicans?

I mean I must admit that there ARE a few of those....Karl Rove, Dickhead Cheney, Bush Sr.....shit, who else? Anyone??? Anyway....there are also intelligent con artists and burglars...so I would presume there are other intelligent Repubs besides THOSE three.

Which also seems to be true of any environmental ethos Repubs may have.

The reason why the Keystone XL Pipeline hasn't been approved is due to environmentally conscious Republicans in Nebraska worrying about their water supply - not by fiat of the Obama Admin.

Most of my Republican friends belong to Ducks Unlimited or Trout Unlimited - both environmental organizations.

I know a shopping mall/strip mall developer who is also a huge supporter of Ducks Unlimited.

Unfortunately, he is also a huge supporter of shopping malls, strip malls and suburban sprawl in general.

It's not about what organizations any politician belongs to it's about their actions and votes. Here in WI there's been an all out assault on environmental regulations since the Republicans took over the Governor's office and both houses of the Legislature. From drinking water to air quality, from wetlands to wildlife management legislation weakening environmental protections was drafted by and passed by the Republicans. The only bill weakening environmental protections that failed was the mining bill and that was because one Republican actually looked at the facts and considered the consequences.

I remember a meeting a few years ago with a Republican State Senator, local citizens, a couple State agencies, and the County Land and Water Conservation Dept. regarding a water issue. After a long discussion the Republican State Senator asked why we weren't looking at this particular issue and doing something about it. The State Senator was then informed that this issue was being addressed, but the funding was cut off by the Legislature. The State Senator didn't realize he voted for the bill that stopped the very thing that he was telling us to do.

    No

At least not in the last thirty years.

And, I'll wager most of the republicans that belong to ducks unlimited et al, do so to shot more ducks, not to protect the enviro other then to make more ducks/trout.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

No douche. I am very concerned with the environment. I am an environmentalist. I just don't practice the illogical, faith based religion of environmentalism.

For example, I don't recycle because recycling is actually more polluting and wastefull than sending the stuff to a land fill.

I also don't make any votes or personal decisions based on trying to help ease global warming as global warming is a fiction developed by radical leftests for their financial and political gain.

I bet I have a smaller "footprint" in the environment than most lefties here.

Goddamn...the fact that you don't know how to spell common words in the english language says two things:
    1) You don't read much do you?
    2) You didn't study that hard in college (or did you even go?). Yeah, I'm going "east coast elite" on you, dumbfuck.

Or it just may be a 3rd thing: You were born lacking a frontal lobe.

You don't recycle because ... shocker. Got any facts to back that up? No. But your an environmentalist I see.

Another great example of why the "conservative" movement is on its way out. Keep pounding the drums for the tea party of stupid like a blathering idiot.

I hope someday for a conservative movement to emerge from the clutches of the tea party to regain some semblance of sanity.
Education must be the answer, we've tried ignorance and it doesn't work! Wait, nevermind, when you see a liberal using science to advance an idea...grab your wallet and your freedom and run.

The conservative movement is no more on it's way put than the liberal agenda it rails against. What will eventually be in hopefully, is a conservative movement that is a movement of fiscal policy and not personal intrusion into the lives of people and their life choices that don't (read shouldn't) affect anyone but themselves.

The liberal movement isn't much different in that it wants to tell people that they should buy into every policy that is supposed to help everyone, when that just isnt realistic and leads to helping no one but the people in power who wield the purse strings.

Here is what I don't get: wouldn't conservation of resources be sound fiscal policy?

Why is it that conservatives (beyond those few wealthy shopping mall developers who happen to support Ducks Unlimited) are SO against conservation?

Environmental consevation would seem to be the height of true conservatism....then why are so many against it?

Environmentalism is the same exact thing as liberalism to many conservatives....they have a tendancy to use the terms interchangeably.

I'd go so far as to say that environmental conservation seems to be the Maginot Line of politics....liberals line up on one side of the issue and conservatives line up on the other and lob fusilades at each other.....sorta like Polyasshat.

Its all part of it, but there are extreme left wing conservation groups who are so out of any mainstream thinking that they can't help but get huge push back from the right and from quarters of the left as well I'm sure.

Extremism from both ends of the spectrum define peoples perceptions. My conservative philosophy doesn't exclude strong feelings about proper stewardship, land and resource management. I doubt I'm alone in those feelings.

Thanks, ILC, for addressing the bad link. That was actually a very astute and germane article. Would one expect any less from such an organization as them?

The last few paragraphs of the article were actually quite brilliant, thus I repost those below:

"The issue is not consumption of a resource, but the environmental costs of satisfying demand. In other words, focus on limiting greenhouse gas pollution or erosion, not on limiting energy or agricultural production.

    2) Jevons paradox suggests a false choice to policymakers: either make energy production and consumption more efficient, or do something more fundamental. It’s not clear why society can’t work on both options in parallel, especially since empirically the rebound effect for most technologies over the timescale of decades is much smaller than the original efficiency gain.

I like to call the next few decades “The Great Crunch.” As humanity strives to meet the resource demands of more than 10 billion people, many of them aspiring to live as resource-intense a life as people reading this blog, we will struggle greatly to protect or restore nature and the benefits it supplies us. Efficiency gains buy us time to make our whole economy more sustainable.

The more I confronted the Jevons paradox argument, the more it seemed to be just an excuse to stand back and do nothing. Why should government promote efficiency, ask proponents, when Jevons paradox would imply it’s a wasted effort?

To me they seem like fisherman on a sinking boat that, when the boat begins to take on water, would rather finish the beer they have on board than start bailing: “Pass the beer boys, nothing to do but enjoy the time we have left.” A very convenient attitude, but a dangerous one to the extent that it distracts people from, say, putting on their lifejackets or trying to build a lifeboat. "

That last paragraph seems to illustrate a general view that many conservatives seem to take toward environmental issues such as clmate change, etc. That is precisely what I was getting at with this thread....thanks again!
