Silver streak puts custom aluminum houses on that boat. Maybe they've improved since '03 but I wasn't impressed with the boats at all. Maybe working in a custom boat shop gave me unrealistic expectations but the welds looked like shit and they were just poorly finished. Not something you would notice from the outside but pull the floors out to insulate the hull or put on a custom house and you'd notice the shoddy workmanship for sure.

I'd take that old glass bowpicker over any hewescraft any day, in a heartbeat.

Looks like a fiberglass house, though....I'd rather prefer an aluminum house.
Having ridden in one of those... they are shit, first off you look like a total gaper, second the burn a shit ton of fuel, third they are loud as fuck inside the cabin, fourth the cabin is forward so in chop its bumpy as shit, fifth I'd use that hull design in rivers; they suck in chop, and last they cost about 4 times as much as they should.

Go find yourself an old bowpicker, there's a shit load for sale in juneau, being in the stern in chop = way better...

not sure where you're going with that. I've never lost a boat anchored Aleut style.

This years is a beast, built for a friend of mine ~$3500 for the aluminum, just test the welds before you trust the welds.
maybe Juneau high schools do something similar?

Yeah...that's exactly where I've seen them....on rivers. They're on the Yukon in Eagle...they're on the Kuskokwim, sometimes people will trailer them to deeper parts of the Susitna...but not me!!...that's jet-drive stuff!

ALL these boats are muy expensive, though. If it were me, and I was laying down significant dough for a new boat....I'd think about something I might make some extra cash with. I'd lay down a little more money for something like this and make some $$$$ for part-time remote site hauling.

You can easily make a quick $1500 or $2000 on a spare weekend without even getting your hands scaly!!

+++++ on the fiberglass bowpicker, too. You can pick those up used for as little as $14,000 used.

In kodiak there's a bunch of places to trailer a boat too, 45 minute drive vs. 4 hour boat ride around the cape...

Well that's not exactly dragging a boat around. I'm quite familiar with Kodiak, having lived there almost 5 years.

Thanks for all the input guys. Spent some time talking to more people around here and its slowly coming together. A pilothouse/cuddy with a v-berth is looking more and more important. Here are some that have made the list recently:

    http://www.rockysmarine.com/c_dory.html

    http://www.rockysmarine.com/glassply.html

    http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/boa/2917306562.html

    http://juneau.craigslist.org/boa/2919755709.html

My neighbor is also part of Alaska Boat brokers so I have that going for me. He is on the lookout as well.

That glasply is the best of the bunch. They are solid boats.

the Glasply is probably the most seaworthy. I am not a big fan of an older carburetor engine. Too bad it doesn't have a new small diesel, would be a nice rig. I would say go with the Cdory. 3' longer than the seasport and probably $8000 cheaper after you pay shipping from Bremerton for the Seasport. My 2cents.

I always assume anytime you buy a boat you will need to repower. I agree that the Cdory would be a great runabout.

I think you are correct about the repower. A new small diesel would probably run around $30000. That would be way to big an investment for that boat. A new gas motor with EFI would probably be in the $12000 range installed. That is why I liked the Cdory. The savings over the Seasport would be a good start to a new motor.

Woah. Slightly worried about dying in the ocean now. Bluebird, suits for sure now that I have read this thread and that article. Our lives are worth it.

    BUY A DAMN BOAT ALREADY

    Thanks all for the advice.

The c-dory is my top contendar, BUT as is normal the wife likes the cleaner more outfitted options. The advantage of the outboard is I have a friend up here who is an outboard mechanic so he can help if anything ever goes wrong. I don't think I would want to repower the cdory too much higher as that is the recommended HP now. I am concerned that if I ever want to pick the pace up in choppy weather the cdory is going to pound our teeth out.

I guess the new thing around here is converting boats like the glassply to outboards. Not something I would do anytime soon at that price, but it is nice to know it is an option.

My mechanic friend thinks the seasport is the way to go.... Main concern there is price after delivery and a little on the small side.

Seasport is a good boat but not as heavily built as a glasply
IME, I trust those glasplys, I used top run a 28' as a charter and saw some big water in it. There are a lot of sea sports around though, I just don't have experience with them.

I just looked at the Seasport site. Did not see a 19' listed. IMHO discontinued means probably wasn't so good an idea. 3' is allot more boat. I do not know about the pounding never been in a cdory. I see they have been making that model since 1987. probably have it pretty well figured out. Unless you plan on keeping this boat for along time or just enjoy working on things do not think about major re-powers. You will never get your money out of the boat. My idea of repower was to replace existing with similar if needed. You can add allot of bells and whistles to the cdory with the savings over the seasport. If you go down to Petersburg to look at the boat take a look at that Boston Whaler. Not familiar with that model but they have a good reputation. A low ball offer on that could pay off. Also when you do decide on a purchase make sure you get everything you can as in anchors, survival suits, life jackets, spare parts.etc. If you see it on the boat make sure it comes with the boat. good luck have fun

Just got more pictures of the cdory. It is out of the running. Way to much wrong going on to even bother. Looked like the transom was a homemade bolt on repair to start.
