Thread: Small tripods

I need a small travel friendly, lightweight tripod. I was debating about the Leica tabeltop tripod or getting something bigger and extendable like a Benro or a used Gitzo, but the Gitzo is pushing my budget pretty hard and I'd probably rather get a new lens and a cheaper tripod than the Gitzo. Does anyone have experience with the Leica tabletop tripod? I'll mainly be using it for landscapes, nighttime long exposures, and self portraits/summit shots. Obviously an extendable tripod will be more versatile but that tabletop tripod is just so awesomely small you would barely notice that you were carrying it. Ill be carrying this while touring, and also taking it on a long Euro trip this summer so small is key, and light is better but being small in a pack is more important than light weight.

You're looking for a gorillapod. Won't be super steady in winds or anything but it's super small, super light and easily changeable. It even wraps around things. Plus they are $50. One of the most convenient items I put in my camera bag. Even if you want something more beefy you should still own one.

Oooo, nice. Sturdy enough for super long exposures on a heavy 7D with 70-200 lens without the moving parts slipping and blurring up the photo? The price is definitely right with those.

The top-line Gorillapod (called the zoom or something) will carry a pro body + 70-200.

Yup, if you step up to the $100 range gorrillapod it will hold that setup. I would recommend using the lens collar mount to help balance it.

have the go of this, prefer it to the various gorilla pods i've used. it isn't tiny, but it fits in my bag which is good enough for me.

If you get a GorillaPod be sure to get the ballhead, too. I find it damn near impossible to get the camera level without one. The beauty of the GorillaPod is you can bend the legs into an infinite number of positions. The problem is you can bend the legs into an infinite number of positions...

Loving this gorilla pod guys, thanks for the recs. On my next trip in June Ill be needing a video capable tripod without breaking the bank. Any good ones out there to travel with for no more than a couple hundred bucks (but cheaper is better)? Included in the couple hundred bucks has to be a tripod base and head.

You could save maybe $30 or so and get a 701 head but I would go with the 501.

I liked it personally so much I got it for our small in office tripod.
