Swap Plates vs. Inserts?
So I've been looking at the binding freedom swap plates and inserts, and I have a simple question, why use swap plates when you can use inserts for significantly less money?
Its not that I suck at spelling, its that I just don't care

It´s a lot more work to do inserts, so I guess that´s one reason.

Do you think a ski with 18 large holes will have the same resale value as a ski with one set of wide holes that will probably not interfere with other mounts?
are you capable of installing the inserts?
are you capable of installing the plates?
which do you think someone who is is gonna charge more for?"When the child was a child it waited patiently for the first snow and it still does"- Van "The Man" Morrison

I've got both, for skis I'm only running one binding on I use inserts. If I want to use alpine and dynafit I like the plate. Less holes.

ok other than less hole is there any reason to not use inserts instead of the plate?

plates
if you might want to ever move mount points
if you have a hole conflict with previously drilled skis
if you want to sell your skis someday
inserts
if you are in love with a pair of skis and the mount point is there for good
if you want the lowest-to-the-ski mount
if you have a ski drilled once (or twice) for the same bindings you want to keep using e.g. I have an old pair of b4's that are still good and are also already drilled for salomon and d'fit so inserts would make the most sense there...... jfost is really ignorant, he often just needs simple facts laid out for him...

If you used the same pattern from a Sollyfit plate with inserts, they would be really close together and might weaken the ski. I've done both but only put that many inserts in skis with carbon or metal.

plates are actually cheaper because you can use them forever

So you can use real binding screws to hold plates rather than lesser area thread on exterior thread of inserts. That was my thinking when I decided to go to plates some time ago.
Inserts are very easy to fuck up/fail IMHO.

Plates are easier to install, and do not require any taps. Less chance of fucking up the mount with place, i.e. Wider tolerance of drill hole position with plates.
Downside plates are heavier and higher. May also affect flex???

the plates, because they are made of aluminum, tend to be easier to crossthread, which you won't experience as quickly with the stainless steel inserts. just gotta be a bit more careful.

I was thinking of getting the DynaLook plate and dropping that on a ski, on inserts, that already has inserts for Duke.

I just got my dynalook plates and I am beyond stoked on them. Way lighter than I imagined.

I think this topic is pretty well covered with the above posts and various other identical threads from the past. It really comes down to personal preference - if inserts makes sense to you, and you feel confident about your ability to install them, go for it!

Recently did one of each.
If money and weight are not an issue, and you want interchageabilty, plates rock. Easy install, nice product.
Once cost and weight come into play, inserts start being more attractive, if you are confident in your mounting skills. Or adventurous.
Once I am done with my touring quiver I'll have:
S3's with plates
Voodoos with inserts for Marker f12
Snoop Daddies with inserts for Dynafit
3 skis, 2 bindings, lots of choices.

inserts are not that hard to do.
plates do offer more bsl adjustment if you change bsl or want friends to borrow you skis"Fakers are Maggots" - T. Hall, 2011
