Equipment recommendation for touring/pist skiing in varied conditions (Scando+Europe)
Hi,
Im considering buying a one quiver set geared towards touring and pist riding, 70/30. But I feel im in the need for some advice on regards to which skis to pick.
Last year I was riding with Salomon Quest boots, Marker Duke bindings and Atomic Access skis, but I quickly found out that touring with this setup was simply too heavy for me. The reason why I got this gear in the first place was because I got a really good deal on it and I was just switching over from telemarking the last 6 years.
This year I was planning to do more touring, possible between 50-70% and the year after that hopefully around 70% touring. I weight about 150 pounds and im about 177cm (5,9”?) in length, Im an average to decent rider and I usually ski in Norway and Europe which means variable conditions. I don’t go switch and I don’t really drop cliffs.
The setup I have been thinking about is as follows:
Boots: Scarpa Maestrale (also looked at the TLT 5’s but I think they will be too cold for our climate and possibly too soft)
Bindings: Dynafit Radical TLT ST
Skiis: I have no idea when it comes to skis, there are so many to choose from but I can get a good deal on a pair of K2 Coombacks from 10/11 season, problem is that they only have 188cms left and im afraid they might be a bit too long.
So I guess I have two questions:
1: Bindings - Ive heard stories that the Dynafits can get banged up and possible even rip out of the skiis if skiing on hard pists but Im not sure if this is true and if the new Radicals are more tolerant towards this? (Im still going to be skiing in the pist, but probably not more then 10-14 days a year.)
2: Skis – Are the 188 cm Coombacks ok or too long, and if so what else should I go for?
Any ideas and suggestions would be much appreciated!

Everything you mention sounds like a reasonable choice, but 188 in a Coomback for your size is too big. Ideal size for touring is probably 174. They have both 174 and 181 here: http://www.telemark-pyrenees.com/en/...2-p-48584.html
Dynafits for lift skiing? I think that's been discussed at length here. 30 percent of how many days? How "soft" can you be on your skis? Do you huck stuff? etc. etc.

Keep 2 different kits : one for resort / sidecountry and the other for touring.
No point of trying to get things done with only one setup, you will have to make so much compromises that it is not worth it.
If you are skint, you can get soooooo cheap used setups.
And as gregL said, the 188cm coombacks are way too long for you, as K2 run very close to their true lentgh. No idea to lug that long skis for touring : extra weight, poor manouverability, both when going up and when coming down.
And I would be wary of the radicals: there is issues with the heelpiece (rotation, replacemnt pins) and some people have started
to complain about the cast toe piece, the the pins start to develope play very quickly.
So get the older st10s or fr12s for cheap from somewhere..
Google is your friend, check out italian & german webstores ,they advertise on ebay.de /fr/it and you can get dirt cheap packages from there, especially if you get 10/11 skis & bindings.
The floggings will continue until morale improves.

thanks for your replies! Sort of threw my thinking way off i must admit but it makes sense.
So i will get a kit for touring!
I will also stay away from the 188's and get 174's, will they still float in powder or is this more for traveling up the mountain? For me its definitively important to enjoy the ride down.
Ebay sounds interesting but i must say Sport Conrad's prices are hard to beat and convenient.
I can get:
Coombacks
Dynafit STs
TLT5's (what the hell, if its a touring kit i figure i wont need to stay warm in the lifts
)
For 950 Euros

Pull the trigger on that rig and don't let the gear whores around here confuse you with their gibberish. You can ski whatever you want with that setup.
