It's not just the Presidential candidates who are wealthy but Congress too. Not a value judgment, just stating the obvious: wealth, income and power are inseparable in an oligarchy.

Perry at $1.2m net worth isn't worth that much.

Why would Ron Paul carry a personal loan? Do they mean a line of credit or is he holding $500k in personal debt?

Not an insight into the loan but Ron Paul's portfolio is interesting and valued somewhere between $2.44 million and $5.46 million:

But Ron Paul’s portfolio isn’t merely different. It’s shockingly different.

Yes, about 21% of Rep. Paul’s holdings are in real estate and roughly 14% in cash. But he owns no bonds or bond funds and has only 0.1% in stock funds. Furthermore, the stock funds that Rep. Paul does own are all “short,” or make bets against, U.S. stocks. One is a “double inverse” fund that, on a daily basis, goes up twice as much as its stock benchmark goes down.

The remainder of Rep. Paul’s portfolio – fully 64% of his assets – is entirely in gold and silver mining stocks..

Leveraged ETF's are a wasting asset. A bit like options. I doubt he holds that long term and probably has an advisor trading it.

I have no problem with someone holding gold. It's just another asset; pick your poison.

What I find more interesting is how much is a politician worth before heading to Washington, and how much are they worth in the immediate years after leaving Washington.
I still call it The Jake.
