01-26-2012, 10:41 PM #178Sorry all I could think about when reading this was "Real Man of Genius" and the tune playing in my head. The Mayor of East Vail Bio and 1/25/12 Report
Meet the man who defines grace under pressure. If you’ve been screamed at while minding your own business up in EV, he is your man. An established photographer who still feels the need to be the biggest blowhard in the history of EV, he has been exploiting the EV zone for years for his own benefit and looking for unsuspecting travelers to unleash his enormous ego and wealth of snow safety knowledge on you in his own special way.
Ironically, he got his ass handed to him in CDC. Now he likes to ski Tweeners and yell at people across the valley about what they are doing wrong. No doubt he has perfected the profile sunset pow shot and ridden that donkey to the ground, but he still persists, like a bad weak layer in the snowpack. Although his list of bad backcountry decisions is as long as his photo credits, he is the definitive voice in EV.
Here’s to you mayor of EV! Self- elected to the fourteenth consecutive term. Master of all he sees and you as well if you venture into his district! Step aside and show him the proper respect!
He represents everything that is wrong in EV. Period.Do I detect a lot of anger flowing around this place? Kind of like a pubescent volatility, some angst, a lot of I'm-sixteen-and-angry-at-my-father syndrome?
fuck that noise.

So I guess I'll chime in after seeing the ridiculous reaction to my post. First off EVI is an institute like TGR is a gravity research company, never billed as anything else. Come on, doesn't anyone else see that? As far a my suicidal ski cut. I was roped in according to Jeff Cricco's CIAC report? No. Middle of the bowl? No. I skied fifty feet from a ridge to a tree and touched a part of the slab by a cliff where I have seen it trigger many times before. It resembled nothing like a patrol cut to control insabilitiites across a face. 14 years and 1000 runs back there and I have to listen to shit talk from people that don't know. Hate talk and handwringing is all I hear. I never advocated it for anyone else to do and did it based on my own experience of the area and time in. I took the risk knowingly and did it on my own. I put noone else's life at risk. Otherwise I was just telling a story of a run I took and never glorified it. As far as the personal shit in the forum, I'd rather be skiing, thanks.

While we're on the topic of rocket surgery, here's another gem from the Wasatch conditions thread...
I think you can second guess people's individual go/no go decisions ad nauseam and in the end it all comes down to "we're all big kids and can make our own decisions." But, i think when you get into this kind of a snow pack and start making decisions that pretty fucking clearly have potential safety implications for everyone else, it's a whole different ball game. The guys in the teton slide pretty clearly communicated in their super-well-spoken comments that they did not anticipate that slide was going to rip that big. If they did, they definitely didn't give me the impression that it even crossed their minds that they were about to flood a heavily trafficked drainage with 40 feet of concrete. Looks like more or less the same story with this west monitor business.
Look, if you want to do any of this stuff with generally self-endangering implications, I could not possibly give less of a shit. Even the near-miss video of the three guys brilliantly simultaneously meadow skipping in a terrain trap doesn't touch me in my special place. God knows I do plenty of dumb shit myself. But, I don't think it's a real big stretch to understand why some people are inclined to want to punch a motherfucker at the thought of a few train loads of snow maching their way at the hands of some ski-cutting-cornice-kicker waving his avy dick around for the interwebz.
Not that i'm exactly in a hurry to go wander around underneath any of these particular slopes with our stellar snowpack right now, but i'm with SFB on staying the fuck away from all of this noise right now.Last edited by good4nothing; 01-27-2012 at 12:42 AM.

The butt hurt is strong with this Martin guy. I like it. Thanks for skiing. Us snowboarder skittle chicks dig it.
What about a good ole fashion schleping? Oh, I know you want it and know that you know what I'm insinuating. You're gaping, wide open.
I'm telling you, you are getting troll baited, but you can't stop - the butt hurt is so hard. You will continue.

In regards to the actions at EV and West Monitors. Webster defines a phrase that sums it up -Russian roulette, a type of duel or act of bravado preformed with a gun loaded with one bullet. Pull the trigger five times and nothing happens, but the sixth one is going to hurt. Go ahead and do that shit in the remote backcountry, but in crowded places like the central Wasangles throttle back on amature avalanche mitigation please.

Here's some more swearing during a slide. What's everyone's opinion on paid fed's kicking these off in the middle of wasangeles? Is OK for them?... Me, I'd rather hear the Monitor chick O swearing than my favorite forecasters.
This is where I think the skiers responsibility code applies in the backcountry and in avalanche exploration. TreeBark says...Sure, you should not be down below in the runout. But the idea that you should not purposely trigger a slide in an area before you are positive it is free of people takes precedence.

Ehh, I don't think insulting him and yelling at him will make him decide, "hey, maybe I should close the site down". I think we're stuck with EVI, unfortunately, and perhaps we should help address the issues we have with it, instead of just bitching about it? It's far more likely we'd be able to mold it into something that isn't a plague on the EV community.
Yeah, sounded to me like Jeff was addressing someone else he saw.
To me, it was pretty obvious WHAT you were doing. I think what we're all trying to understand is WHY. The risk of this dangerous ski cut is worth it in this area, because ____________________. Fill in the blanks please, and be honest to yourself and us about it.

If you are not putting anyone else in danger, I don't think you have to justify your risks to anyone. What looks crazy to some, is just plain fun for others. The risk of speed flying down the Eiger is worth it because_______. Mountain athletes have had to answer this question from the public for eons. Starting with Mallory and the best answer ever..."Because it's there".
...But, I guess there are two kinds of risk takers... the dumbass kind who don't even know they are taking a risk and the thoughtful, calculated, experienced kind. One is responsible risk the other is not.
