Sending this one to the top
Be careful about buying snowboard goggles for skiing. Snowboard goggles come in right eye and left eye (for goofy-footers) dominant models. This can make it hard to see correctly when skiing because you are facing straight down the hill, not sideways.

I cannot even go outside to get gas, or park at safeway without wearing my stud finder.

Fuck, when is this going to end? I already shredded the webbing on my impromptu harness for my stud finder, and now I have to get more batteries. It kept beeping while I was trying to sleep. Kept me up all night.

What to do? What to do?

On a related note, a lot of these avalanche forecasting guys rely heavily on donations.

Several are way behind their normal donation levels for this time of year with the low snow, but they're still forecasting either way.

Not affiliated with any of them myself, but maybe make sure you throw a lift tickets worth of cash at them to keep the forecasts coming. I'm sure lots of people here already donate but if you didn't know they need the cash, now you do...

At Crystal Mountain WA, yesterday I got beat up by a very small slide (in bounds) off The Throne into Campbell Basin.

When the slide hit, I double ejected and rag dolled. I wasn't buried. Afterward, I got my gear and skied away from the slide zone. I have sore knee, but otherwise fine.

This is happening in bounds, and my beacon was in the car. LFMF.

    RIP:

    http://www.vaildaily.com/article/201...ntProfile=1062

VAIL, Colorado — A skier died Sunday after being caught in an avalanche in a closed area on Vail Mountain, authorities said.

The skier was a juvenile, said Jessie Mosher of the Eagle County Sheriff's Office, adding she did not yet know his or her exact age, name or gender. The call came in to authorities at around 1:30 p.m, Mosher said.

The avalanche occurred on Upper Prima Cornice, which is a double-black-diamond run on Vail Mountain, said Don Dressler, snow ranger for the U.S. Forest Service's Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District. The area was closed to skiers, Dressler said.

“There were two in the party skiing together,” Dressler said. “One was able to ski for help. When Ski Patrol was able to respond, that was when they started to perform CPR.”

Vail Mountain reported 9 inches of new snow as of 6 a.m. Sunday morning. The avalanche danger for the Vail area is currently rated as high.

“The weak snowpack will not be able to handle this new load,” today's report for the Summit-Vail area by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center said. “Human and naturally triggered avalanches are very likely today. You will be able to trigger avalanches from remote distances and from low-angle or even flat terrain. You need to use extra caution near or below any slope approaching 30 degrees.

I fell in a tree well at Stevens on Wednesday.
I was maybe 50ft away from my partners. 50ft is too much. You might as well be alone.
Being pitched backwards towards a tree well was one of the scarier things that has ever happened to me.
I was lucky that I was able to grab on to a branch and then reach one of my bindings to unstrap. There was no way I could reach the other binding. I never thought that would be a problem, as I am pretty flexible (can touch my fists to the floor without flexing my knees).
I got out of there, but it was a close call. Too close.
I made it to the bottom and my friends were there waiting with that "should we be getting worried" look on their faces.
We talked about trying to stay in better contact in the trees, but it's just not realistic if you want to let it rip.
Moral of the story: Don't fall.

    General Comments

Brighton Patrol received report of a avalanche in the Hidden Canyon sidecountry area around 11AM. They reported a group of four was on the slope when it slide. All 4 were caught and carried. 2 partially buried, but uninjured.

They knew the hazard was HIGH, but stated they were more aware now. They carried no rescue gear although at least one had rescue gear in the car.
Thank god one had a beacon in the car......Jesus

That read about old mans leave you scratching your head, do the lack of heuristic group dynamics lead to situations that will result in death? One beacon is not much good....
