I'd like to add that being in bounds doesn't mean you can turn off your brain.
On Feb 19, 1986 there was an in bounds avalanche that killed a guy at Alta. I skied that run a half an hour before it ripped. I watched it from the chair lift.

I know I'm preaching to the choir for the most part - but even in resorts shit happens. Keep your avy eyes on - even in bounds.

^^ Beeping in bounds isn't a bad idea with the current state of affairs...

I've never heard of a slide inside the resort boundary...unpossible.
Guys and girls...this isn't the weekend to be silent. If you see folks making the trek to EV or the Bald Spot or whatever local sick gnar area you have...speak up. Just let em know and make sure they know. If they still go, it's on them. Make good decisions.

I know there hasn't been any snowfall yet, but it'll be interesting to see what the ESAC's take is on areas that have no snow at all right now.
No--I'm not looking to do any BC given the likely conditions, but shouldn't it be safer on terrain with no bed surface of snow?

Big advisory south of Big Sky in the Lions Head area. Nothing close-in to Bozeman, however.

Honestly, there's a few places in Mush/EV that I'd still ski this weekend, but VERY few. That said, with new terrain opening in-bounds, it'd be far more fun to ski the resort. That, and I'd prefer things to settle and begin healing, rather than send moving one of the few storm snows we've gotten since November.

SheRa, you gonna be out there at Vail tomorrow?

I thought about it, I know it will be fun. But I've got a really cool ski day planned for tomorrow instead. Up the t-bar first thing, then over to some hiking I know at Breck for the untouched. Um, I think hiking first, then t-bar. Then to Keystone in the afternoon, date w a ripping 7 year old skiing bumps on north peak. Laps through Frieda's incubator park. Then night skiing and watching all my team summit kids bashing gates. Stoked.

When I get back from Jackson, I'll be at Vail as much as possible. Out the gate...it's been so long, I miss my happy places over there.Last edited by SheRa; 01-19-2012 at 12:30 PM.

Keep in mind also that avalanches are not the only things that kill skiers. Be safe out there everyone, ride within your comfort zone, wear a fucking helmet, and come back home alive and healthy.
All I know is that I don't know nothin'... and that's fine.

I've had these exact thoughts for weeks. I'm really hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Hopefully enough fear will remain from Jamie's death and the Nov. 13 shitshow at Alta to keep people sane. Trackhead hit it right on the money though, next week will be the real test when it's sunny and all that fresh is calling like a siren.

So I'm headed off to Alta on Sunday and my first ski trip ever outside the east coast. I have zero plans of skiing OB, but tell me how nervous I should be or any precautions I should take with a chance of avalanche

the resorts spend many thousands to safely open terrain
and ski patrol trains endlessly to protect you inbounds
relax enjoy your vacation dont do anything foolish youll be fine if you have gear and a beacon i'd sure as hell wear them
if you'd feel better with a beacon on i'll lend ya one
enjoy your vaca thank all the trollers you see
tip generously to those who provide good services

I think there has only been one in-bounds avalanche fatality at Alta in the 70 years they've been open. I was just very, very lucky it wasn't me. The avalanche control people at Alta are as good as anywhere in the world. But, steep slopes with lots of snow always deserve respect. They're not Disneyland rides.
