Tahoe vs Mammoth Pond Hockey Tournament
We all know Mammoth has the better resort and backcountry so let's see who has the better skaters.
Tahoe vs Mammoth in 1st annual Eastern Sierra Classic.
When: January 28th and possibly the 29th if we have enough teams.
Where: Lundy Lake or anywhere that I can find that has better ice that you can drive to. Lundy is over a foot thick but has some cracks. It is really good black ice on the western edge.
Six man teams with 4 on 4 play. Games will be two fifteen minute halves with a two minute intermission.
Bring lots of BBQ, beer, and a light and dark jersey.
If this thing goes off the winner will achieve legendary status in the Eastern Sierra. The winning team will get some kind of trophy that you can drink beer from that will be passed around like Lord Stanley's Cup. By planning an outdoor hockey tournament in January, maybe we will get lucky and it will be snowed out so we can finally put away the rock boards. If not we will have one hell of a pray for snow party.
If you are interested in playing post here, pm me, or email me mammothhockey at gmail. If anyone needs lodging hit me up and I can get you a deal at few places around town.

That weekend will be tricky. I could do the weekend beforehand, but the trek from LA is pretty far! So so so wish I could make it. It will be awesome.

I will be in Minnesota at the US Pond Hockey Championships the weekend of the 21st. There was some talk in the Tahoe weather thread but none here. I guess when the gauntlet has been laid down people begin to get second thoughts. I guess I will have to make a flyer and send it to the South Lake rink.
As soon as this was mentioned the weather forecast changed. Maybe some snow next week. Let's get this tourney going so it dumps.

Mammoth doesn't have better terrain than Squaw. I ski Mammoth, because I can drive there 2-3 times a month from Socal. If I had the choice, I would ski Squaw, where I spent my skibum years, hands down.
Don't get me wrong, I love Mammoth, but I like Squaw's terrain better.
Better backcountry I won't argue with."Have you ever seen a monk get wildly fucked by a bunch of teenage girls?" "No" "Then forget the monastery."

We are playing in the open division. The Mammoth Lakers. We're probably going to get smoked but it's not about that. I am hoping we get at least one win and don't lose to an all girl team. I hope they have cold beer in Minnesota.

In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.

So, do you have to live at elevation to play or are flat landers welcome? I'd love to play and may be able to rally some Bay Area skaters if you want them.

You are more than welcome to join the festivities. Looks like the Tahoe guys are dropping like flies. If the weather stays like it is Convict Lake will be the place. I checked it today and it is about an inch and a half. It should be skateable by Monday. How bad as will it be to have a tournament here?

Way to go fellas. This will make it snow or sure and if not we will have one hell of a party. Looks like we may get some some snow in the upper elevations which will not affect Convict. Maybe we can ski and get this tourney going.

Next Week:
What the Dweebs see is the upper closed High Monday in the Bering Sea Retrograding into Eastern Siberia, while a good portion of the Westerlies break underneath. A very long and may I add wet fetch sets up by Tuesday. The source of the moisture is from the tropics west of Hawaii. Today’s 12GFS has PWAT forecasted higher then 1.50-1.75 inches in the fetch Wednesday into Friday. The initial target is the Pacific Northwest then Northern Ca by Wednesday shifting south into Central Ca by Thursday/Friday.
Here is the problem…… What happens is that as the upper Anti cyclone shifts westward well west of the Dateline 160E, there is a tendency because of the teleconnection, for 500mb heights to rise about 140W with a flat subtropical ridge that extends north then east to the Central Ca coast. 700mb temps over Mammoth increase to 0c by Thursday and with 1000-500mb thicknesses about 558DM, snow levels will likely be north of 8000ft and possiby 9000ft. Once and “if” the air-mass gets really saturated, there could be little difference in the snow level from the freezing level. So the Dweebs expect the possibility of some very heavy wet snow at and above 9000 to 10,000ft….Especially Friday in the over running pattern. Now the EC model looks a bit cooler so still time to adjust. By Friday night, the GFS has the Freezing level coming down rapidly, however most of the fetch has shifted south with much drier air coming in from the north. This moist wet pattern is not the system that we are really waiting for. That is still looking like 10 days away or sooner of the ECMWF is correct. Better Vis later in the upcoming week……

I just saw pix of folks skating up on the summit of Ebbets Pass.
Since that's pretty much equidistance between Mammoth and Tahoe that might be an option...plus it wouldn't give either team home turf advantage, thus evening up things a wee."Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."

Convict broke up due to the winds. Going to look at a few ponds today. I figured we would do it down here because the resort has more terrain open than anything in Tahoe, I can get you guys cheap condos, and cheap beers.

Looks like the snow is definitely finally coming. Hopefully we will enough to ski rather than play hockey. This tournament shouldn't die but be postponed until next year. If for some reason the storm comes in windy and the big lakes, June and Convict, freeze we can still have it.
Either way it's a great idea and seems to have pissed off the snow God's with our lack of faith. Good time to be had regardless.

Tamarack seems like it would be a good spot, plus there's bus service. The lakes were frozen enough to attract hordes of suicidal asian tourists to walk on it three weeks ago, should be great by now!

Twin lakes sucks right now. It was snowed on earlier in the season and is now full of pock marks, cracks, and rocks form said tourists. Convict is all water and may freeze after the storm. That is an option. I am heading out of town but will check it on Monday and give you all an update.

Any updates on this event?
I think Tahoe would be a great place. Lower levels haven't gotten too much snow and some of the lakes are at least a foot of ice. Skated on Caples Lake last week and it was fantastic. Probably too much snow to make it work on that particular lake now.
Any developments on this event yet?
