If you heard a " pop " it might be your ACL. Very common to hear. If it's your MCL you should have pain on the medial side ofyour knee ( The inside side ). If walking on stairs feels funny then it's the ACL. Diebert did one of my knees and Cambell did the other. They are both good.

Pretty much. I was planning on getting into BC skiing this season; taking an Avi 1 course, buying a new setup, all the appropriate gear, etc. With the way this season's been, I've decided to postpone all of that until next winter. I'm thinking this is not the best season for a rookie like me to be fooling around out there. Staying inbounds 'til then.
I also wanted to buy a used sled, but this season's been so lousy, I can't even justify that! Tons of snowmobiles in my town, and sadly they've pretty much gone unused all winter, stuck in everyone's driveways.
There IS a huge upside, however (for me)! I've saved thousands of dollars this winter by not buying all that crap at once. I would've been broke had I been able to follow through with my previous plans.

If u have been around a bit you know that the mountains around Bozeman are a continental snowpack. Backcountry skiing anything more then meadows, or during very small windows of "stability" is a very risky proposition and you might die. so, well we all may die at some point, the risk of dying is much higher in this sort of snowpack then it would be in a less continental snowpack. 1+1=2 Luckily for search and rescue, approaches are long enough that very few people ski in the backcountry around Bozeman.

Yet another ill-informed opinion from John C.
Guess you are unaware that the road up to Hyalite Canyon Reservoir is regularlly plowed now and the skiing up there is damn good. Access isn't lift served UT slackcountry or Colorado road passes but it is not for ONLY the superhuman.
The regime in this area isn't 100% Continental, 8 out of 10 years it is probably more Continental than intermountain but there are stable years. That being said, if you pick your terrain wisely and have some backcountry savvy you aren't assured of dying in an avalanche. Plenty of people tour regularly here and live to a ripe old age.
Most years there will be PWLs that need to be watched and that is the price for skiing beyond the ski area ropes.
Can't deal, move to the coast and ski with cunts like Johnny C.

hey butt onion, u kinda just proved my point.
Hyalite is plowed but to get on avy terrain you gotta go a ways. Like miles, thank god cuz that is all the filter Bozeman people need.
"pick terrain wisely" like I said meadows....
"backcountry savvy" Yeah like wait in other words, until June most the time
Continental, intermountain, whatever your ski patrol geek book calls it? I call it sugar on the ground 8 out of 10 years.
ps. Montana sees one tenth the backcountry traffic of the Tetons/Wasatch yet has just as many fatalities. Why? cuz the snowpack sucks.

Pretty sure its not the ACL, popped that off a couple of years ago on the other knee this definitely feels different. Majority of pain is on the inside of the knee at the bottom of the femur the anchor point for the top of the MCL. Now i need to go about getting an MRI to see if i did damage to ACL or PCL hopefully its just the MCL. Will check into both doctors, thanks for the recommendations.

Howdy folks, I made a trip to the East Rosebud drainage of the Beartooths with my friends Ty and CJ one week ago and we skied the Chamonix Couloir in pretty stellar conditions. Luckily the fog lifted enough so I could identify The Doublet rock feature, which marks the entrance to this hidden gem.

Thin snowpack, but consolidated with some fluff on top.

The guys climbed a little ice to ski another line to lookers left, The Chamonix to the right...shes a looooong one!

We also put together a little edit, but I couldn't figure out how to embed it...click n hop on over to https://vimeo.com/36747592

If you're using the new vimeo you have to remove the "s" from the https in the URL to embed
Real nice work.

Low Angle Touring around Big Sky
Hey all Southwest Montana Mags-
I'm headed to Big Sky tonight to stay with my buddy for a couple days, going to be doing mostly resort skiing, but still kind of broke and just recently got into touring (trekkers, cheap rigged skins) and if I could save a day ticket and go tour some low angle stuff (ya know check out the trees and stuff) I'd be super stoked. So if anyone has any reccomendations where I could go with relative safety (low angle/fun trees), I have no avi training or gear, or if someones around and wants to show me some stuff as well, all I really know is Beehive Basin is a heavily toured area.
Thanks Guys!"South Dakota is for lovers."

ouch, that one hit home eh?
here is the monday morning quarterbacking from the experts, interesting read:
http://arc.lib.montana.edu/snow-scie...ISSW_O-065.pdf
The thing I find interesting is that they were not able access the bowl early because of "lingering mechanical difficulties with the tram" So, bad layer, gets loaded and by the time the patrol finally get to it, it is stuck there and they can't get it to move. It was not patrols fault and sorry for insinuating, it was clearly management not having the beer can running. Would they have been charged with incompetance had their been 20 fatalities? This is the largest in bounds avalanche during operation ever I beleive????

What's your point exactly? You originally were attempting to criticize Bunion, I believe, who does not even work for Big Sky. After initially criticizing the Big Sky Ski Patrol you backed off on that and instead started to attack Big Sky management? What exactly are you getting at?
EDIT: Sorry, clicked "Post" and then I realized that I was asking questions that required a reasonable person to answer. You clearly are not a reasonable person and won't have any coherent or meaningful response as there really wasn't any coherent or meaningful response that went into anything you said. Disregard the above please.
Let's keep all this kind of crap out of this thread and get back to the stoke and talk about skiing in this corner of the world. Here's hoping Pres Day Weekend is snowy and safe.Last edited by OverTurn; 02-16-2012 at 11:11 PM.

Hey Johnny, thanks for posting that Link.
Scotty Savage is a good buddy and deserves more attention for his work in avalanche education.
I left Big Sky and moved over to MLB in 2001/02 so not sure what your point is (if you really ever had one).
However if you are trying to demonstrate how much Big Sky and Moonlight and the Y/C have on our plates when it comes to hazard mitigation you have succeeded.
All 3 areas do a damn good job dealing with complex terrain and a difficult snowpack.
So .... you are welcome.

That John C alias is one hell of a troll. Very interesting alter ego someone has.
Ned- Great little viddy, thanks so much for not having any POV shit in it. Love the E. Bud, probably my second favorite drainage in SW MT so far. There are some beasts up there for sure.
