ghetto bent fat brake size - what size to bend too - 105mm?

    Hi,
    Thanks for helping the newbie.

I saw the mntlion thread about bending brakes to make them fat. Have pair of PRs (165) for wife. but skis are in Japan. Im not (in Japan) and cant see a pair in the flesh till I am in Japan and we clip on in the snow! (next friday I might add).

I need to take bindings with me _pre done_

Have bindings: S800s older bindings from her previous skis (light use only).

I got the brake arms off. The internal diameter is currently 70 (between the arms at their narrowest points) and the external diameter is 79 (so they are probably 80mm brakes then? ie. measured with calipers on the outside of the brake arms)

PRs are 90 at the waist on the specs (but... are they 90 where the brake sits?).

Simply put, I plan to bend them so they have an external diameter of 105mm (presumably meaning an internal diameter of 96mm). Will this give enough clearance? (Im allowing a few mm for error)

Can someone maybe advise me how fat their PR is at the brake in millimetres?

    Tar in advance
    JD

The BC mark on the PRs is forward of that on most alpine skis (it is a jib stick) so the brakes are not far from the narrowest point on the skis. The Salomon brakes that are made for the pocket rocket are 98 mm if I remember correctly (probably measured the same way as your 80 mm brakes).

By the way, if you are not a freestyle skier you should probably mount them behind the BC mark on the skis. I mounted mine 2 cm back (185 cm) and in my opinion they perform much better in all conditions. Salomon has more accurate tables for where to mount bindings on the PRs, but I think 1.5 cm should be about right for the 165 cm.

just mount the binding and put the brakes on and pull out the legs a half inch once they are on there. not a big deal. not rocket surgery. no calipers needed!

I presume that you have done this then? ...cause a) theres no way I could put this binding on that ski with 80mm brakes and "bend em out" with your hands...and i dont have a vice in Japan ... b) the brakes beings 80mm wide wouldnt even get over the waist of the ski, and c) they just clip in relatively loosely to the mount and have no leverage and would just rip out even if you could bend them "in situ"

Thanks Lok. Just what I needed.

its for my wife so Il have to ask her whether she wants em BC -1.5cm or not (I expect so - unless I convinvce her the park is where we need to go). I can probably convince her to do small jumps but landing switch and doing a rail..well..thats pretty unlikely (though I have it in mind myslef to try and learn this season).
