How relatively tracked out did the elevator zone get? I'll be up there tomorrow and have my fingers crossed for the upper gate to be opened.
there is powder out there, and it ain't gonna find you

It was great to be back out on my favorite hill.
Knees are still hurting so I definitely had to take it easy.
Side slipping rocks! LOL
Great to see so many friendly faces.
Not too impressed with management or patrol.
I get the feeling that they really don't give a fuck about the locals.
Not having the upper gate open till @11 was ridiculous. Not having passed a groomer up the exit trail is retarded. Normally, I wouldn't complain, but my knees would have really welcomed the rest that a groomed exit track provides.
Short day for me, and regardless of my minor complaints it was still a great day to play in the mountains and say hi to friends.

It has been a couple weeks since they had the Nash gate open, eh?

not a couple of weeks, but nodoubt a couple hours late today.
surprising because gates have been opening rather systematically well this year. i have seen very little issue with this matter such as appeared today. if there is an issue it would be nice to inform the guests.
i hope patrol cares about the locals.

Rolled in and up just as the gate opened.
If things seem off the pace consider our current snowpack.
Things aren't normal out there.
Case in point, did you happen to notice the climax in the lower part of EV meadows?
This usually doesn't shed until April/May, not in the middle of Winter.
Also, there was a 17" ~ 20" soft slab skier triggered release on the lookers right side of Orbit that ran off a 50' cliff and into the right flank of big trees all the way to the bottom. Every similar aspect that we skied in near proximity leading up to this appeared stable with only sluff evident... Do not take the snowpack for granted, things are not normal out there.

the magic snow accumulation machine looks to be putting out just enough to be fun but not too much to be annoying.
my magic number is 5" soft
12" hard

Dear Alpental management (yes, we know you are lurking),
Please keep the ski school out of the side country.
Unless you are going to have your instructors certified as guides, teach some basic level 1 skills, they have no business taking classes out the gates.
It's already bad enough that there is a policy in place that doesn't promote safe practice.
You know the one. It's the policy that says "it's OK to go trough the gate with a BC pass, but a partner, awareness or the proper gear aren't required", people who are properly equipped without a pass are not allowed..."

I can't speak for management, but I am an instructor at Alpental on Friday nights and I can say that they constantly tell us instructors not to take our classes out of the gates. Almost every week they say something about it and in the written communications they usually say something as well. That may not apply to the Buddy Werner program, but I know with the standard kids programs, it is the case. Any teacher taking students out there (unless they are one of the training instructors with an adult student on a private lesson) is an idiot.

I was told that was the policy as well.
Check the "all new" Spring Alpental lesson offering on the website....

how bout the time an instructor with a private lesson student waited over an hour at bottom of debbies telling everyone how they were going to go to the front of chair 2, this chair 2, so they could spin laps and not have to wait. this was a summit instructor, fully uniformed,up bragging about how he doesn't have to wait on a pow day. child he was with was bummed and just wanted to ski sessel which was loading.
i know this to be fact because i was there and listened to his bullshit for too long. when i called him out the student agreed that he was NOT having fun.
just first hand info

....ok back to the topic of the day before i got home...
today was so good that i got lost in time and space while the snow just piled up. there was a 3hr. window inwhich the nash gate was open and bottomless. wonderful morning at alpental that i usually would just dream about.
kinda knew that it was coming to an end when shot 6 shut down because the snow was building up fast. took last bc lap around 1 and moved alot of snow with each turn. it was as if the new snow would just follow you down the mountain teasing from behind with rolling sugar.
huge cornices are now getting to house size status, keeping an eye up and left gave me a neck kink.
bc closed as we exited traverse to a safer elevation out of the wind and puckage.
probably going to be a slow opener tomorrow

kinda refering to the bc gates phatty, shouldn't be a problem for the professional crew that prepares the mountain for inbounds action.
