    Who would wants to Race?

I've been thinking of a way to bypass FIS and rules and all that going around gate bull-crap and have a back to basics racing league. I know King of the Mountain exists on certain days at certain places, mostly for bragging rights but if you don't know the right people (I don't) your left in the dark.

I'd be down to put up some money even. In Vancouver the longboard scene has been holding outlaw races for a long time and while having an unsanctioned race or event at a resort would be difficult to pull off all at once... what about allowing a week, month, or the whole season to post a helmet cam video of a pre-determined route. A route wouldn't be necessary, it could be totally open, top to bottom... Or from specific spots. Of course conditions would play a huge part... but if you have a month or a whole season to try and time it right... everyone would have a fair chance.

This format could also be used for free-skiing competition, but with just a helmet cam POV, it might be difficult to factor is style and smoothness. I know the pro-s get awarded every year for a helmet cam segment... why not host a TGR Amature Hour Competition Series. I definitely don't know my way around a computer to organize anything like this. But I think it could be done. For it to work properly you would probably want each mountain to have its own group of outlaws.

As far as what I'd like to see... who thinks they are fastest from the top of spanky's ladder to the bench?
What do you mean why do I have duct tape on my skis!?! It improves edge hold, increases pop, adds durability, and most importantly, boosts horsepower by like 30%... what? your skis don't have horsepower?

Okay sure... I @#$%^ed up the Title on the thread with some disgusting grammer... Would would want to race? or how about Who wants to race?... i guess combining the two doesn't work.
I guess this idea is doomed, maybe its the horrible title... I guess I don't have enough posts to be taken seriously either.
It seems to me that the bulk of people on these forums are more interested in who's taking Lindsey Vonn to the prom, or chicks in bikinis posing beside skis, or watching videos of other people ski, or hearing out trips that other people have gone on.

That Daron Rahlves Banzai thing looks like its about half of my idea.
I don't see the need for gates or start lines or announcers, or any money whatsoever to go to anybody except the peoples putting money on the line to give it a go. Or just bragging rights.
Also Rahlves' event is a full on event designed to be sold to sponsors and broadcast to viewers for profit... Not to mention that its too far from the PNW for me. I'm thinking local shredder mini-comps.

I guess I'll have to post a video and a time and see if there are any challengers.

Or maybe no one gives a crap about racing...

And Patrol would be totally cool with this unsanctioned outlaw Chinese downhill racing league. Yep, no passes pulled at all. They'll even help set the course and buy the first round of beers after.

I Think it's a cool idea, using a helmet cam and ski a course; see who has the fastest time. There would be some maggot bragging rights.

Thank you for the Hot Dog Chinese Downhill Clip... the glory days of skiing...
I understand the stigma racing has. I hate FIS and the racer culture, and all the rules and politics and bull crap. The point is getting back to basics; who's can rip top to bottom the fastest... no course, no gates, and minimal rules. (No Speed Suits, wear a helmet and if you get caught and get your pass clipped your out). Other than that I'd say anything goes.

How could the mountain stop you from strapping a camera on and skiing top to bottom? or some pre-determined unmarked course? ... Sure you'd be going crazy fast and dodging gapers, but it wouldn't be an event and people would only race against the clock.

Racing has BECOME lame... but I don't think pushing yourself to go as fast as you can is lame... Hell I might even ski top to bottom switch and post that time too. Anybody else rip groomers backwards?

I think I'm pretty fast, but I'm not sure anyone would beat Pow11.

In the early 90's we used to race on ski-out from the glacier down to the old Stoker (Cruiser? anyone remember those old fixed-grips?) chair. Tucking that whole thing (how many km is that?) was madness and hell on the legs after going through Spanky's.

Careful to stand up and get a look before the one drop-off by the rope line where the road comes back into other trails (coming from Crystal)--don't want to pull a Leroy there and land on someone.

    So Dexter you down?
Anybody have any suggestions for Whistler Blackcomb other than full top to bottom or Spanky's to the Bench...

I know this outlaw racing isn't going to catch on with the cool kids... but then again all the cool kids were snowboarding 10 or 15 years ago.

Anything that makes Pow11 super fast? I might have to give him the Nancy Kerrigan treatment if he's a threat...

Dude's just a solid, fast skier who grew up racing and bump skiing, so he's got good fundamentals and can ski pretty much anything (fast). Not a small guy, either, so if you're going to Kerrigan him make the first shot count.

Peak to Creek early one morning could work, I guess, or maybe from the top of the T-Bar on Blackcomb to Merlin's. I don't know, personally I'd be worried about wrecking myself trying to race people from Spanky's. I guess timed might be safer than traditional Chinese DH style.

Don't they still have the Peak to Creek GS? Too bad the Saudan race is gone--that was fun.

I agree that timed is the only way to do it. Taking as many attempts as needed to bag a fast time. Also... it appears like we are going to have a bit of a dry spell so now's not a bad time to rip the hardpack for a bit.
