    - The average snowcover extent was 329,000 square miles below the 1981-2010 average. This is the 3rd smallest January snowcover extent in the 46 years of records available.

    - Snowpack in California's Sierra Nevada was less than 50 percent of average at the end of January.

After crunching the numbers, the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) has found that January 2012 was the fourth warmest January on record across the contiguous United States. This is also the mildest January since 2006, which was the warmest in records dating back to 1895.

In addition, the December through January period also ranks as the fourth warmest. Perhaps this is no surprise given the lack of intense cold air and snow that we've seen across much of the country so far this winter.

States with a top 10 warmest January (9 total) - AZ, KS, MO, MN, ND, NE, OK, SD, WY

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Alaska, where several cities had their coldest January on record. Precisely where the state as a whole will rank in history was not available at the time of this writing.

Last night I forced myself to drag my ass up through the rain and was rewarded by awesome storm pow night riding on mid 1. You'll be stoked if you make it up today. Socked in down towards Turny.

Meet at 4 around 10am ? I'll be on skis today

Epic mashed potatoes. Whipped up top home style in the middle and box o'flakes at the bottom. I haven't had that hard of a time staying standing in years.

Was heavy but good. Sorry we didnt hook up, think I saw you from 6 - orange bros?

Sun is supposed to poke out tomorrow, I think we'll be heading down again.

We've won it. It's going to get better now. You can sort of tell these things.

More red than orange. Blue and yellow fartbag not as water proof as it once was. I parked the bros next to a pair of beat up bibbys at the sitzmark for a while. My legs jellied quickly in the mank.

Thank you for validating my neurosis. My wife, the social worker, seems to disagree. I thought it was weird at first and then I remembered she isn't a skier.

My babysitter called me! All it took was a butthurt facebook post. Tomorrow will be awesome, the whole south side was closed and north face was from Chuck's down, there will be untouched tomorrow no doubt. And deep...
