TR: Antarctica 2011 (nsfw@pg. 3)
ongoing thread - check back for more photos
Right now I'm sitting in the SLC airport with a backpack full of expensive camera bits in the chair beside me. By late tomorrow I'll be in Ushuaia, Argentina and on Wednesday we'll set out on a 120-passenger boat across the Drake Passage. If everything goes as planned, we'll be earning turns on the Antarctic peninsula by next weekend. Sweet.
I've had a bit of a mad week finishing work projects, moving into a new place in SLC, and getting gear together for Antarctica. My three-pair quiver got craigslisted away yesterday and, cash in hand, I went straight out and bought two new pairs plus boots then mounted em, molded Intuitions, cut skins, waxed sticks and shoved everything in a duffel.
Sitting here in the airport, I'm still going over mental packing lists but so far havent come up with anything I've forgotten to pack. Anyway, the flight's boarding.
Puttin holes in skis
Adios SLC!

Rad. Take lots of pictures of penguins for us.

If you want the grand tour of Ushuaia, find my friend Matthias (mat-tie-uh) at the Bureau of Tourism in Ushuaia, tell him I sent you and take stuntycok with you.

Buen viaje senores! (I can't speak penguin).

Don't forget the dramamine! The Drake Passage is notorious for bringing even the saltiest dogs to their knees.
Just got back from the Arctic aboard the National Geographic Explorer - a 2,600-ton ice breaking vessel. Made it to within 520 nautical miles of the North Pole. Hoping to make it to Antarctica in 2012.
Not really skiing related, but if you have some down time and are interested in checking out some photography from the Arctic Circle, check out my blog: http://aboardtheexplorer.com

Thanks for the offers to hook up local beta! This forum is great. Is StuntCok on the trip?
After a few thousand miles of flying, crying babies, and airplane food from another dimension we made it to Ushuaia on the southern tip of South America.
I was feeling strung out from minimal sleep but rallied for a 10pm dinner and a glass of vino before powering down for a long sleep.
The chic dinner was not in my dirtbag budget and Nohow and I tried to make up for last night's bill by avoiding a cab fare today. The hill that began just after this picture was taken felt like something that should only be done in CrossFit.
Now we're situated in a nice hotel with a bunch of the other ski-cruisers. Ushuaia has a touristy, North-American vibe right until you see the bathroom, then it no longer feels like the USA. I'm happy to report that the water pressure is energetic.
