red mountain/rossland area riders???
so i just moved to rossland, bc....been planning on moving out here for years, but it's probably taken about 10yrs now to actually get my ass out here.
will be working part-time instructing (and anything else i can find, at this point). looking to get into some backcountry stuff this year - never really done any actual touring or backcountry (yet), apart from hiking an hour or so out of the way (from the top of the lift), ending up at the bottom of the lift eventually anyway at various resorts around bc/ab/wy/co, SO if nothing else i'd like to get into some slackcountry too. will be my first season on a pair of AT bindings, which i'm stoked about.
any of you from the area that could suggest areas to ride? the the main mountain resort area seems pretty small, but i've heard it's bigger than it appears (and tonnes of tree skiing stashes to make up for its apparent small stature).
i've convinced a buddy to get into skiing this year, which should be sweet as he's super stoked on going hard all year, even if he's a newbie. HOWEVER, i know i'm gonna just want to do my own thing when i'm not showing him the ropes. both of our girlfriends are decent skiers, but i'm not sure they are comfortable skiing at my level of skiing...and will probably just be content riding w/ eachother.
so here's my lame request:
WHO WANTS TO GO RIDING WITH ME AND SHOW ME WHERE THE HELL TO SKI AROUND THE RED RESORT AREA....and surrounding area?
i like beer, don't like weed, but i do like long walks on the beach under the sunset....are there any beaches around here?

Lots of people on AT equipment and easy access to bc at Red. Make sure you do a side trip to Whitewater.

The West Kootenay Touring Guide is a paper copy of whats on backcountryskiingcanada.com. Handy and probably a good starting point for slackcountry at Red. Chic Scott's Summits & Icefields Columbia Mountains covers many of the bigger tours/traverses in the Kootenays. The big thing to keep an eye out for is the new Mighty Bighorn maps, I think Trevor is getting them printed right now. He'll have one for the Rossland area & one for Kootenay Pass. Pretty much cover all of the touring in those areas. Should be a pretty slick product and piss off a few of the "I'm such a local" types.
And welcome to town dude! I finally made the move (well, to Trail at moment...) at the end of the summer as well. No pass so you won't find me there to often, though if you see a dude with a splitboard hitching down to the Plewman/Old Glory trailhead, stop and give him a ride.Life is simple. Go Explore.

Good for you man. You'll love it there. I'm originally from Ontario and can tell you that you will appreciate spending a season there. I'd get a touring set up.

you'll have a fun season at red. it's much bigger than it appears. there's so much to explore and every where you turn there's awesome trees. I like slides for long sustained vert, and there's good tree stashes on either sides. for your gf (I saw elsewhere she's intermediate), mini bowls on the paradise chair is a great blue tree zone. most of the paradise chair trees are a good intro to red.
hit up ww while you are here too. watch the snow, sometimes ww gets more than red, so you can pick your day that way. this'll be my 3rd year at red, I also ride at ww and know it much better.

Pretty much all the ski resorts in B.C. (except Whistler/Blackcomb) and some in Washington are part of a reciprocal deal that offers 25% off lift tickets for pass holders from other mountains. If you are an employee of one of these mountains and have a letter from your employer saying so, then you get 50% off. Whitewater offers the first 2 days free for staff from other mountains.

Heya,
I'm coming out for all of March. I'm a pretty decent off piste snowboarder who will be looking for buddies to ride with.
I'm also looking for a place to stay, so if you know of anywhere I'd be super appreciative. I'm a Brit/Aussie circus performer coming over from the Uk, well housetrained, good cook and keen to get some quality side/slack in!
Hit me up if you're keen: knoxdave(@)yahoo(.)com
Cheers!
Dave
