    Hut trips

Where you going this year? What's on your list that you haven't done? What was your favorite past trip? Ski season is almost here. Time to start planning...

I will definitely hit some of the huts in the White's this year. I've wanted to get to Katahdin for two years now and always failed. I'm doing my first out west hut trip this year, my friend who lives in Portland wants to do it here, on the bargain plan. I'll be flying in so the fact that they produce bedding will greatly reduce my baggage burden. http://www.wallowahuts.com/

Asulkan hut for sure as I haven't been and will probably finally do the entire Wapta traverse. The fun ones are always the tent missions though, looking forward to those the most. Also Stanley Mitchell hut is on the cards also.

I know a guy here in Portland who's done the Wallowa hut trip a couple of times and has had great experiences. I'd like to get out there too, but I'm more likely to go guided -- I have Avy 1, but don't have much experience in the backcountry.

It will take forever for you to become a cautionary statistic with that attitude! Step it up.

Wallowa Huts are definitely on my list this year. The terrain our there is amazing. I was just out there and took this timelapse last weekend

If you're coming in from Portland, look into Three Sisters Backcountry too.

You can snowmobile into the yurts at the wilderness boundary($40 roundtrip). 3 hours to Sisters/6 hours to Joseph

Couple of weekend trips up to the Keith's Hut at Cerise Creek, Elfin Lakes and Brew Hut. The usual local huts around Vancouver/ the Sea to Sky.

Never made it to Asulkan, high avy danger kept me at the Wheeler the last time I was in Rogers Pass. Wheeler earns points for being the nicest Hut I've stayed in.

Anyone have suggestions for decent Hut trips around Baker/ a few hours from the border?

Doing Vance cabin out of ski Cooper in co, with a bunch of friends, should be a mellow time, not super gnarly skiers, which Is good because the hut doesn't have a lot of sweet terrain nearby. Jan. 1-2.
Also doing skinner hut before christmas with my brother and his friends, not stoked on the 11 mile trip in with my heavy ass AT setup

    Great timelapse!

I will throw in another vote for the Wallowas.

I've stayed in the huts, but my last trip out there was a do-it-yourself camp with six guys. That was a great trip.

Wallowas do not suck. I just got called up to go there in a few weeks for a wood choppin mission! The view from the Norway yurt is pretty good too, good place for some apres action. These guys have some fun terrain as well. I hit that area up when I can hitch a ride on a snowmobile. First 4 photos from wallowas, other three from around PPG yurt.

Wallowas had the Salt Creek burn. I think it was the 80s but you can search for it. I know Roger Averbeck sold Wing Ridge, but that was a sweet self guided setup.

The real shame is that they don't run the gondy in the winter anymore. That kicked ass skiing down to McCully snowpark and then back via truck (all pre Silverton).

Also, no hut thread should omit Treasure Mountain Hut. OMFG, talk about terrrain.

Beaver Lake Hut in the La Sal Mtns in SE UT. The best tree skiing ever in the South Mountain Glades:

Treasure Mtn Hut near Silverton, CO. Gnarly steeps and sketch snowpack, but epic nonetheless:

The Ridgeway Hut in the San Juan Hut system is pretty rad--Cobra chute and tons of steep lines not far from the hut.
The yurt system above Logan Ut is pretty rad for some good snow, mellow turns and its great newb tourers.
And the Green and Taggart Huts in the Elk Mtns behind aspen are also a must, i've been here twice. Pprobably some of the best access of any hut/yurt systems i've been to, though the snow is hit or miss.

    and stuff.

I will chime in for those who are around Colorado or plan to head this way. We plan on going to the Hidden Treasure Yurts (south of Eagle, Co)for the third year in a row. The two yurts hold 12 comfortably and the skiing has been fun so far. This year we are planning tours and hoping that the weater and snowpack cooperates. If not it's just more of this......

Kinda, I've been thinking about Guyot for two years now. No hut though, that will be tent. I doubt it will happen. Zach found a TR of some people that did it last year on a two day. I think I travel fast and light enough now that I could make it worth it on a weekend.

Rollinthunder is currently talking about camping on Franconia Ridge for a couple of days and hitting all the Franconia slides.

Hut wise, I was talking more about the huts in the Presidentials. I'll definitely stay at Hojo's and Harvard. I also want to check out the North side of Wildcat A.

We gotta do some touring together this year. Where do you usually stay?

I'm interested in hut trips in the NE as well, but I haven't heard much about them: where do you go for info? I'm hoping to try for a Presi Traverse (NSR) but am curious in NE hut trips as well and would appreciate where to find out more about them. Katahdin sounds tremendous but definitely a long trip, in terms of driving as well as the actual time on and enroute to the mountain.

If you are doing the traverse, there aren't many hut options. Try going to the AMC website, I know lake in the clouds closes, not sure about the N or S huts. But those huts are also expensive as hell ($125 a night, stupid AMC). Your best bet would involve coming down from the ridge and going to Hojo's or Harvad Cabin. But you will add mileage and vert to your traverse. Crawford Notch and Carter Notch are open in the weekend. I'm planning on hitting Carter and trying to ski the N side of Wildcat A and Carter Dome. I'll camp out though and use the huts for the facilities so it doesn't cost me anything. AMC = Appalachian Money Club

If you're interested in Katahdin, here's a TR from a trip I did there a few years ago...

    http://www.famousinternetskiers.com/...g-mt-katahdin/

It's a long way in, but it's a pretty unique mountain for the east coast, definitely worth the trip at some point. The problem is, it's super easy to get skunked on weather, since you have to plan a trip ahead of time and the snowpack/weather is a bit... inconsistent. A lot of the steeper stuff up there you really want some avi knowledge too.

I've wondered about the skiing near Carter Notch for years, but never really gotten it together to go in there. Take some pictures if you go!

^^ Regarding Carter: I was super stoked about the options over there until a mid summer recon... I'm much less confident about the Wildcat side of Carter after a mid-summer recon. The creeks and drainages appear to be pretty tight. The Carter Dome lines are pretty mellow for a skin that far. And the Wildcat ridge trail has numerous steep sections that would require removal of skis on the up. I still think it is worth a shot. It's hard for me to tell what it will look like once it gets 60" of snow on it.

So you guys who went to the Wallowas, did you stay at McCully or Norway? If you went to Norway, did anyone make it to Marble Mountain?

AMC= The people who will get to you and get you out if you break your leg in the Whites in February. If you're so core-gnar that you know of the mega sick lines in Carter Notch, then hopefully you're able to take care of yourself in the woods without stealing from a hut. The caretakers who work there in the winter generally do not appreciate it when gumby's come for the weekend, set up their tents behind the bunkhouses (illegally), steal the water they've hauled and boiled from the lake, take up all the space in front of the fire without paying, and shit in their toilets, all while thinking it's okay because you're "camping". You probably never thought about it before, but there are people who live in these places all winter, every single day, and taking advantage of them has to be one of the highest levels of douchiness that I can imagine.

If you have a problem with the price of staying in the huts I recommend you boycott them, and every trail and facility the AMC maintains throughout the Whites. You see, the AMC is a non-profit, which means that whatever money is made in the huts is put pack into the trails programs, outdoor education for kids, conservation efforts throughout the northeast, and keeping the huts open all winter so that there can be responders already in the woods in case of an emergency. There would be no WMNF without the AMC.
