Photo/Negative/Slide scanning service...or DIY scanner?
i got a load of old photos, negatives, and slides that i would like to get scanned.
option 1: farm it out to a service.
option 2: buy a scanner and DIY.
i'd do it myself if there is a device that will somewhat automate it so that i don't have to do it frame by frame. otherwise, i'd like to find a cheapish service.
recommendations?

I went the DIY route a year ago. Picked up one of these...

... on the eBay, used it, and re-sold it when I was done. It was as automated as the software could make it, (I think it scanned a few slides at a time) but was painfully slow. The quality was unbeatable and I learned a ton as well.

I'd farm it out if cost wasn't an issue. Also consider the resolution you want.
As said it's a slow going process, that also requires some post processing time and has a bit of a learning curve.
I swear every image scanned differently which was a slight head ache.
The last slide scanner I had did 5 at a time and strips of negs.
